49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo decision ‘one of worst’ K.J. Wright has seen

Wright very critical of 49ers’ decision to go on from Jimmy G originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Former Seattle Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright knows what it’s prefer to face Jimmy Garoppolo, which explains why he had an extremely strong reaction when asked concerning the 49ers shifting from the veteran quarterback and only Trey Lance.

“Among the worst decisions I’ve seen manufactured in a pretty very long time, I’ve surely got to be honest with you,” Wright said on 95.7 The Game’s “Steiny and Guru” show Thursday. “I’m not just a fan at all that move. You have Jimmy G on your own team. He got you almost to the promised land. What more would you like from the person?

“Keep rolling with Jimmy G and when you’re not likely to roll with Jimmy G, then trade him to some other team because no quarterback really wants to make an effort to develop with an improved quarterback over his [shoulder], overlooking him. So Jimmy G must get traded. I didn’t just like the move at all.”

The 49ers cultivated an idea to transition from Garoppolo to Lance if they traded up in the 2021 NFL Draft to choose the North Dakota State star with the No. 3 overall pick.

The theory was that Garoppolo would play the complete 2021 season while Lance watched, learned, and played sometimes. Then, the 49ers would trade Garoppolo earlier this offseason, allowing Lance to dominate.

Except Garoppolo underwent shoulder surgery early in the offseason, torpedoing any potential trade interest. Despite several teams looking like they might use Garoppolo because the preseason progressed, no deal materialized and the 49ers had no need to simply release him.

So, in a sensational move, with rosters having to be trimmed right down to 53 prior to the 2022 NFL season, the 49ers and Garoppolo decided to a pay cut to help keep him on the roster as Lance’s backup, creating among the stranger situations in recent history.

Sufficient reason for Lance struggling in the 49ers’ Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears last Sunday, the demands Garoppolo to be elevated back to starter only grew louder.

As Wright highlights, the window to compete for a brilliant Bowl always is small and the 49ers currently come in that window.

There are many players still on the roster who have been on the team that reached the pinnacle of the activity 3 years ago while also addressing the NFC Championship Game this past year.

“If I’m a man for the reason that locker room, I don’t care who you traded around get, I don’t care just how many draft picks you gave away, I’d like the very best players on the football field,” Wright told Matt Steinmetz and Daryle Johnson. “Therefore i know it’s extremely frustrating for all those guys. It’s just one single game. Let’s supply the young man a while to build up and grow.

“Nevertheless, you know very well what you have in No. 10 Jimmy Garoppolo. So, very frustrating situation, and I’m sure those guys need to get things determined as quick as you possibly can.”

Lance will face Wright’s former team Sunday because the 49ers (0-1) host the NFC West-leading Seahawks (1-0) at Levi’s Stadium.

While coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have said the 49ers are Lance’s team, the second-year pro still includes a lot to prove to the exterior world, including Wright, who knows what Garoppolo is with the capacity of doing.
