SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA 49ers quarterback Trey Lance appeared in six games and made two starts during his rookie season in 2021, but he may have seen more action or been far better if he wasn’t coping with a broken finger.

Lance told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated he suffered the broken finger with ligament damage through the preseason, also it impacted just how he gripped the ball:

“I chipped the bone in my own pointer finger, therefore i had to hold back on it. It had been super swollen, couldn’t really bend it or straighten it. It [happened] at the Raiders [preseason] game. We’d a bye week following the Raiders game, I had a splint on merely to try to obtain it back straight. So that it chipped, it sort of stayed bent such as this and we just had to help keep working. I wore just a little brace that sort of it pushed down on my knuckle or over on both sides of my finger. I simply kept wearing it and stretching it in so far as i could, scraping it and just looking to get all the scar tissue formation out of there.”

The injury meant Lance was essentially throwing with four fingers, which impacted the velocity and touch he could placed on the ball.

“I didnt really understand how much it had been affecting me until we were consistently getting in to the season,” he said. “Weekly sort of got harder. And I was focusing on it, I knew obviously it had been broken. It didn’t feel great. But I needed to play. I needed at least with an opportunity to prepare yourself and be both, whatever my role was [going to be] that year.”

The North Dakota State product went 1-1 as a starter and completed 57.7 percent of his passes for 603 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions across his six games. He also added 168 yards and a score as a runner.

While there have been occasions when he hinted at his overall potential, the numbers didn’t exactly appear to be franchise quarterback totals for a new player SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA selected with the No. 3 overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft.

The injury provides more context, and he’ll turn to take significant strides given that he could be healthier and the No. 1 quarterback in SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA.

The 49ers still haven’t traded Jimmy Garoppolo, but every indication this offseason has been that Lance would be the starter and last year’s No. 1 will eventually head elsewhere. Which makes having Lance healthy even more very important to a team in a win-now window that just reached the NFC Championship Game last season.

Lance played sparingly in the team’s preseason opener contrary to the Green Bay Packers and impressed by going 4-of-5 for 92 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions.

His first chance in the standard season should come on Sept. 11 when SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA opens its campaign in Chicago contrary to the Bears.
