A large number of people in cities over the U.S. finished Eliza’s run Friday morning.

The runs were organized as a tribute to Eliza Fletcher, who was simply forced right into a vehicle following a struggle during her pre-dawn run last Friday in Memphis, Tennessee. A suspect was swiftly identified and contains been charged with her kidnapping and murder.

The killing of the 34-year-old kindergarten teacher and mother of two shocked people nationwide, and was particularly upsetting to women runners. An obituary described Fletcher as a “born athlete” who enjoyed hanging out outside with husband and children.

Many female athletes fear training alone, during the night or in secluded places, even though crime statistics show such killings are exceedingly rare, many report being harassed or worse, even yet in well-populated areas.

In response, sets of runners made a decision to “Finish Eliza’s Run” in the pre-dawn darkness Friday morning, weekly after her slaying. Many wore pink tops and purple shorts in her honor. Groups ran in Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga and several other cities and towns round the country. Hundreds logged their runs on an internet site dedicated to the function.

In Memphis, starting at 4: 20 a.m., a large number of runners, bikers, among others gathered to cover tribute to Fletcher, CBS affiliate WREG-TV reported.

I ran CC in college. We’d to obtain 10 miles in before our 8 a.m. class. Which meant we ran super early. We were fortunate to perform in an organization. You dont will have that opportunity. Pleased with the running community coming together. #muchlove pic.twitter.com/6IIh5FrAV7

In Boston, several about 40 people gathered at 4 a.m. to carry an instant of silence, and ran a 5K across the Charles River in her honor, CBS Boston reported.

“I’d like visitors to run. It is a solution to have a wholesome lifestyle, it is a way to be engaged in your community, become familiar with people and socialize that you’ll never know otherwise,” marathon runner Lindsay Devers told CBS Boston. “And you also shouldn’t need to be afraid and you ought to have the ability to wear what you need to wear and you ought to have the ability to run inside our streets.”

Cleotha Abston, 38, is charged with first-degree murder, especially aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence regarding the Fletcher’s disappearance and death.
