Apple’s Self Service Repair program now includes some recent MacBooks

Apple’s Self Service Repair program is not any longer limited to iPhones. The business is adding M1-based MacBook Air and Pro systems to this program on August 23rd, providing you usage of official parts and tools to repair your laptop in the home. It is possible to replace the display, the battery (in addition to the top case), trackpad along with other major components. As before, you’re using “many” of exactly the same resources you’d find at an Apple shop or authorized repair center.

You’ll pay $49 to rent a repair kit. TechCrunch notes part pricing is equivalent to for third-party service centers, which range from $12 for an audio board to $580 for a motherboard. You need to trade in your old parts to obtain these prices (a motherboard costs 3 x just as much otherwise), but Apple will recycle anything it can’t rescue. Don’t be prepared to utilize this as a memory or storage upgrade Apple will charge the entire amount in the event that you purchase a board it doesn’t match the computer you purchased.

This program will expand to more Macs and countries later this season. As usual, Apple recommends repairs and then experienced users. It’s still pointing the “the greater part” of customers to approved repair facilities.

This program kicked off in April, and is widely viewed as Apple’s reaction to To Repair regulations, including at the federal level. It will not necessarily reduce government scrutiny, and could not change much for DIY repair fans who’ve considered unofficial sources like iFixit. Still, this may be welcome news if you’d like to not depend on a technician to keep up your Mac.
