Auckland Supercars: Davison keeps DJR at the top

It had been Shane van Gisbergen that led just how in the first stages of the half-hour session thanks to a 1m02.807s.

Fellow Kiwi Andre Heimgartner then took over top spot with a 1m02.634s before Cam Waters lowered the benchmark to a 1m02.430s.

Friday pacesetter Anton De Pasquale had a short stint at the top mid-way through the session before van Gisbergen went fastest again with a 1m02.258s.

Then with 5 minutes to go Davison landed the hammer blow, the veteran setting a 1m02.154s despite not running green rubber.

“Excellent session, really productive,” said Davison.

“We’d an excellent run yesterday, we ran another set [of green tyres] yesterday. But we knew we were strong on the initial set. We wished to tell you the programme which info overnight helped us a whole lot.

“We were prepared to run a fresh set [today] but I was pleased with what we did re-using yesterday’s tyres. We learned what we had a need to, there is no point wasting another set.”

Heimgartner finished up second, just 0.01s off Davison, while Walkinshaw Andretti United pair Chaz Mostert and Nick Percat were also inside a tenth of the pace.

Van Gisbergen was shuffled back again to fifth after not improving on his final run before De Pasquale, Waters, Scott Pye, Bryce Fullwood and David Reynolds.

It had been a hardcore session for both Kosteckis in the field, with Jake Kostecki prompting an early on red flag by getting bogged in the sand at Turn 4.

Brodie Kostecki than had a high-speed off at the ultimate corner late in the session, swiping the wall in his Erebus Holden.

“I’m spewing actually,” he said. “I was needs to get somewhere with the automobile and I made a fairly big mistake for the left-handed, got an excessive amount of kerb and lost it among both corners.

“It broke the left-rear toe link. Thankfully it isn’t that bad, but a little bit of work with the boys ahead of qualifying is not a positive thing.”

Qualifying begins at 2pm local time.
