Australian Anglicans split over same-sex marriage

(RNS) A conservative splinter group against same-sex marriage announced the formation this week of anew Anglican diocesein Australia, triggering an apparent split in the church for the reason that country. The launch of the Diocese of the Southern Cross prompted the top of the Anglican Church of Australia, Primate Geoffrey Smith, to issue astatementThursday (Aug. 18) characterizing it as a fresh denomination.

The corporation, while established by some members of the Anglican Church of Australia and structured to mirror a few of the characteristics of an Anglican diocese, does not have any formal or informal relationship or reference to the Anglican Church of Australia, Smith said in the statement. Smith cannot be reached for comment with time for publication.

Glenn Davies, former archbishop of Sydney in the Anglican Church of Australia, was appointed as bishop of the brand new diocese Thursday at the Gafcon Australasia Conference, a gathering of conservative Anglicans from Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific that met in Canberra, Australia, this week.

It is a sad day, in lots of ways, Davies told The Guardian. If the leadership would repent and reverse to the teachings of the bible, we wouldnt need the Diocese of Southern Cross. Id shut it down and keep coming back.

This split may be the latest in some fissures over LGBTQ inclusion which have bifurcated Anglican denominations in New Zealand, Canada, Brazil and america.

In accordance with itswebsite, the Diocese of the Southern Cross views itself as another and parallel Anglican Diocese bound by theology, instead of geography. The amount of churches in the diocese remains unclear, however the Australian-wide group promises on its website to carry to biblical convictions and hopes many new Anglican churches will undoubtedly be established. Leaders of the brand new diocese cannot be reached for comment with time for publication.

The diocese is really a byproduct of GAFCON the Global Anglican Future Conference a conservative movement within the Anglican Communion formed in 2008 to retain and restore the Bible to the center of the Anglican Communion, in accordance with its website.

Leaders of the Australian iteration of GAFCON have already been thinking about launching a conservative Anglican diocese since at the very least 2021 in reaction to the Anglican Church of Australias murky position on same-sex marriage.

In 2020, the best court in the Australian Anglican Church, the Appellate Tribunal, allowed clergy to bless same-sex civil marriages. IN-MAY of the year, a motion celebrating same-sex marriage didn’t pass at the Anglican Church of Australias General Synod but won support from nearly 40% of voters. Bishops at the overall Synod also voted against a statement defining marriage as only between a guy and a female and condemning same-sex marriage blessings, but approved a separate resolution recognizing that the denominations marriage rites currently affirm marriage as between a female and a guy.

The problem for us may be the authority of the Bible, Richard Condie, chair of GAFCON Australia, said in a statement. The decisions at the recent General Synod, the 2020 Appellate Tribunal opinion that opens the best way to blessings for same-sex marriages, and the watering down of standards of behaviour in changes to Faithfulness operating are types of this. The Diocese of the Southern Cross has an Anglican home for individuals who feel they have to leave their current Dioceses.

Smith, the primate of the Anglican Church of Australia, said its perplexing that the leaders of the Diocese of the Southern Cross are departing, given the overall Synods affirmation of traditional marriage and failure to identify same-sex marriage. Yet members of the brand new diocese seemed to believe that didn’t go far enough in condemning same-sex marriage, saying most bishops at the overall Synod were not able to uphold the Bibles ancient teaching on marriage and sexual ethics.

My conviction is that the Anglican Church of Australia will get a method to stay together, graciously reflecting Gods great love, with this differences held sincerely, the primate wrote. This weeks announcement makes achieving that end more challenging however, not impossible.
