Baty’s bat makes fast impact with HR in first AB

3: 27 AM UTC

ATLANTA — About four hours before his inaugural at-bat as a large leaguer, Brett Baty spoke at some length about his insufficient expectations. He could possibly be here weekly. He could possibly be here 2 decades. All he knew was this:

Im here for grounds, Baty said. Ill allow it show.

Four hours later, Baty jogged round the Truist Park infield dirt, having end up being the fifth Mets player to homer in his first career at-bat (and doing this on his first career swing). His light brown hair peeked from beneath his helmet as he thrust his index and pinkie fingers in to the air, eyes seeking his parents and sister in the stands. Batys family, having driven in from Texas the prior night, flashed the bull horns back at him.

In the visiting dugout, another celebration awaited as Baty received hugs and high fives from his brand-new teammates. Jacob deGrom smacked his hand along with Batys helmet, tilting the brim down over his eyes. Baty grinned from beneath it, in bliss.

By the finish of the Mets 9-7 win on the Braves, it had been abundantly clear that Baty belonged. Along with joining Mike Jacobs, Kazuo Matsui, Mike Fitzgerald and Benny Ayala because the only Mets to open their careers with a homer within their first at-bat, Baty smoked a 113 mph line drive off left-hander Tyler Matzek, delivering the hardest-hit ball by way of a Met in a left-on-left matchup since 2016. On the initial defensive play in his career, he made a running throw to nab Ronald Acua Jr. initially.

Baty finished 1-for-4 and handled all of his defensive chances without significant issue, in a casino game the Mets held to win because of Starling Martes two homers, Max Scherzers 6 1/3 innings and Edwin Dazs late-game dominance.
