- Google Pixel 4 —
- Excellent camera for price
- Silky smooth display
- Useful software features
- Decent performance
The Google Pixel 4 might be an aging phone but it offers a lot to continue to love about it. Small enough to actually fit into your pocket or use with one hand, its 5.7-inch screen is vibrant and slick thanks to having an OLED panel. A 2,280 x 1,080 resolution is sharp with brightness easily cranked up when needed. It also has a 90Hz refresh rate which is awesome for gaming but also simply great for scrolling down a website quickly. Performance means both are reasonable options, too, with the Google Pixel 4 designed perfectly to get the best out of the Android operating system.
One of its other highlights is its camera and photography software. It has a 12.2MP lens that has a f/1.7 aperture to let in plenty of light. Alongside that is a 16MP telephoto lens with an f/2.4 aperture. In both cases, you get optical image stabilization which works pretty well. Besides being fast to point and shoot, it also allows you to easily control the exposure balance of different parts of your photo. Elsewhere, there’s Night Sight mode which means you can even take photos of the Milky Way, according to Google.
On top of all that, the Google Pixel 4 is well made when it comes to software support too. Google Assistant works like a dream while you can use quick gestures to skip through tracks or even silence calls. There are also Call Screening facilities for blocking out unwanted spam. This is still one of the best ways to enjoy Android thanks to Google being the experts here. If you’re looking for a slightly smaller than average phone, the Google Pixel 4 packs in all the key features while being easier to store away safely.
Google Pixel 5 — $480, was $700
- Compact and lightweight
- Detailed 90Hz screen
- Highly capable camera
- Two-day battery life
The Google Pixel 5 is impressively light while including a bunch of key features. More sensibly sized than many other phones that continue to turn into mini-tablets, the Google Pixel 5 is ideal if you don’t want to go too big. It offers a 6-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 as well as a 90Hz refresh rate. The latter means that whether you’re browsing through a website or playing a game, your screen will look silky smooth the whole time. The display also supports HDR10+ and it’s covered in Gorilla Glass 6 so it’s fairly robust.
Such attention to detail continues with the camera lenses. The Google Pixel 5 has a 12.2MP f/1.7 aperture camera with Phase Detection Autofocus and optical image stabilization. It also has a second 16MP f/2.2 aperture wide-angle lens although there’s no telephoto camera here. As expected from Google, it’s the software that makes your photography really pop. This includes Night Sight portrait shots, new editing features for portrait shots, and some impressive options. It’s a great point-and-shoot camera while still offering extensive functionality if you want to get more hands-on.
While the Google Pixel 5 isn’t the fastest of phones, it’s still pretty good for the average user. Capable of playing games or simply allowing you to multitask well, Android 11 runs like a dream here. That’s certainly highlighted by the fact you can get two days of battery life out of light-to-average use of the Google Pixel 5. It’s even water-resistant, able to handle being submerged in up to 1.5m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. Basically, the Google Pixel 5 packs in all you could need covering all the essentials.
