Better Call Saul: Vince Gilligan on Writing and Directing His Final Episode

[This story contains spoilers for Waterworks, the Aug. 8 bout of Better Call Saul.]

The all-star run of Better Call Saul directors is nearing its conclusion, with Vince Gilligan stepping behind the camera one final time to helm this weeks penultimate episode, following series veterans Thomas Schnauz, Michelle MacLaren and Michael Morris. Only 1 episode remains, also it was written and directed by Gilligans co-creator and longtime Saul showrunner Peter Gould.

Ive been lucky. My partner Holly and I’ve known Carol and her husband Brian [Miller] for quite some time. We met in large part because I came across, much to my joy, that she was a fan of Breaking Bad, and I simply couldnt believe it when I heard that. Who of my generation didnt mature watching Carol Burnett? And that has been just a complete pleasure learning her through the years. The appearance of it, we tried to create it look as hot as you possibly can. Paul was a little handicapped with regards to the truth that all this stuff, Omaha and Florida and Albuquerque in this episode, all needed to be in black-and-white. I really like black-and-white. Its funny. Be cautious what you want. Id always wished to shoot in black-and-white my whole professional career. The final time I shot in black-and-white was at NYU Film School. But again, I assume you dont in cases like this, because her life is purposefully bland, so black-and-white Florida was maybe the proper way to follow all.

Paul used some very nice tricks to create it look hot. Minutes were only a touch over-exposed, with the highlights burnt out a bit hotter, things like that. It had been lots of fun playing with the various looks of most of the places.

I didnt have to be there for those who but me, but man! I had an enjoyable experience being around for the ultimate season. I dont understand that it was very important to me. It had been just fun. I didnt feel driven to accomplish it. I simply wanted to take action for fun and because I really like the show. Im a huge fan of the show and I was very lucky to access direct three episodes in a single season. Ive never done that before. Probably the most Ive ever done in virtually any season of television was direct two episodes. Addressing direct three of these and getting write one? That has been the first bout of TV Ive written simply by myself because the final bout of Breaking Bad. This is the initial one I didnt write as a shared credit with another person.
