Binotto says Shwartzman worth F1 race seat before FP1 debut

The 23-year-old, who’s now running under his Israeli passport and licence in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, will undertake both mandatory FP1 rookie sessions for Ferrari at the united states and Abu Dhabi GPs.

Shwartzman won the 2019 FIA F3 title before spending two seasons in F2, finishing fourth in 2020 and runner-up to Oscar Piastri this past year.

He previously his first public F1 outing when he drove for Ferrari at the 2020 rookie Abu Dhabi rookie test in December, before appearing for both works team and Haas at exactly the same event this past year.

This season he gained further experience when he drove the 2018 SF17H at Fiorano in January, and the 2021 SF21 at Mugello in July.

He hasnt raced this year but has been busy on Ferraris new simulator, and his FP1 outings come in part designed to donate to the correlation process.

With Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz both registered to longterm contracts, there is absolutely no obvious chance for Shwartzman at Ferrari.

However, Binotto insists he is worth a race drive, and intriguingly suggested he has shone in the testing he had done so far.

Robert is an excellent driver, he said when asked for his opinion of the 23-year-old by Motorsport.com. I believe he’s extremely fast, especially within an F1.

“Whenever he drove an F1 he’s got been extremely fast with the F1 itself. You can find drivers that maybe certainly are a great in F3, F2 and are not sufficient in the F1.

I believe Robert is among the opposites. He’s got been great certainly in F3, F2 but he’s very, quite strong in F1. Therefore it is a shame for him devoid of any seat right now.

Binotto paid tribute to the contribution that Shwartzman has made at Maranello: This year he’s got worked a whole lot at the simulator. He’s got worked a whole lot helping we in developing the existing car.

I believe as a driver he’s got improved, he’s got developed their own skills, now hes much more mature, even to this past year. Therefore i think he’s a driver that could deserve a seat.

We realize it is rather difficult at this time in this example, but hopefully later on that could happen.
