Boris Johnson Risks Trump-Style Chaos With Talk Of Staying As Prime Minister, Says Tory MP

Boris Johnson risks sparking a Donald Trump-style challenge to U.K. democracy unless he abandons his try to stay static in office, a respected person in Johnsons Conservative Party has warned.

Steve Baker accused the outgoing prime minister of encouraging his supporters to trust he may have the ability to continue in Downing Street.

It had been reported yesterday evening that Johnson is supporting attempts by Conservative donor and peer Lord Cruddas to provide party members a vote on whether to reject his resignation.

Around 10,000 have up to now signed a petition demanding to possess their say on the prime ministers decision to stand down after a large number of their own ministers resigned over his handling of sexual harassment accusations made against an ally.

Based on the Telegraph, Johnson had lunch with Cruddas at Chequers last Friday.

He told the paper: There is no ambiguity in Boriss views. He definitely will not desire to resign. He really wants to keep on and he believes that, with the membership behind him, he is able to.

The peer added: He really wants to keep on to finish the work. He really wants to fight another general election as leader of the Conservative Party.

But Baker, who supported Johnsons leadership bid in 2019, compared the prime ministers method of Trumps refusal to simply accept the consequence of the 2020 U.S. election, which resulted in riots at the U.S. Capitol.

He told HuffPost U.K.: The theory the prime minister can continue now hes resigned following the collapse of his government is risible. Its not likely to happen.

However the act of encouraging visitors to think it could does indeed risk the kind of nonsense that Trump fomented in the U.S.

Its not responsible, its not right and Boris should abandon this fantasy about continuing.

I too lament that his period as prime minister went badly wrong, but wishing it were otherwise isn’t a technique. Its time and energy to move ahead.

The prime ministers official spokesman said: The prime minister has resigned as party leader and lay out his intention to stand down as PM once the new leader is set up.
