California declared an electrical grid emergency Monday as a blistering and sustained heat wave threatens to push the states electricity system beyond its limit.

With an incredible number of homes and businesses cranking ac units to handle temperatures above 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius), electricity used in the biggest US state is forecast going to the best level since 2017, raising the specter of blackouts.
