THE FACULTY Football Playoff management committee is looking to begin the agreed-upon 12-team playoff the moment 2024 after initially voting to expand the postseason starting in 2026, per ESPN’s Heather Dinich.

“There is a concentrate on the timetable,” American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco said. “Our minds have become concentrated because we realize we’ve got to accomplish this if it’s likely to happen. And I believe the goal is always to make it work, but who knows.”

The committeecomprised of 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director, Jack Swarbrickmet Thursday for over four hours hoping to iron out the facts of expanding the playoff by 2024.

“I even feel much better appearing out of the meeting that I did so entering it, and I was positive entering the meeting, but we’ve lots of experienced people and also have common goals also it was an extremely productive meeting,” Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren said. “So I’m happy where we have been and we’ve plenty of work to accomplish, though. We’ve too much to have finished.”

There is initially major doubt concerning whether continue with a 2024 start date for the expanded format will be possible:

Several sources explained Thursday that 2024 will be very hard to accomplish for expanded CFP. Could see 2025 as a likelier option. If its 2026, everything just starts over with a fresh format. As you source just said, We shall try and make it work soon.

But, I’ll say, this source says they wish to start to see the 12-team CFP implemented “as quickly as possible.”

But money talks. As the current CFP contract runs through the 2025 season, Dinich reported that “there’s around $450 million in gross revenue if the commissioners can implement the brand new format for the ultimate two seasons.”

That is clearly a great deal of motivation to locate a 2024 solution.

Because the implementation of the faculty Football Playoff in the 2014 season, only four teams have participated each year. Expansion is definitely among the requests from fans of the activity, however, with the overall belief an eight-team playoff was the logical next thing.

Instead, the activity will move right to 12 teams in either 2024 or 2026, a significant change for college football.

The determination which 12 teams will undoubtedly be selected per season was already decided, with the CFP committee continuing to supply the state rankings and the very best four seeds likely to the four highest-rated conference champions. The field will undoubtedly be made up of the six major conference winners and the six highest-ranked at-large bids.

All that’s left to choose is whether 2024 is really a realistic target for expansion.

“We’ve had 4 or 5 excellent calls in a row,” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said. “This was not something where we have been off course, in order that means we are all racking your brains on how to do that thing. So there are many energy in the area. There are many optimism, but it is the details. The devil’s in the facts and the task which has to be achieved.”
