Charles Oliveira confirms he pushed for McGregor title fight

Charlies Oliveira, the former UFC lightweight champion who was simply stripped of the title in peculiar circumstances in-may, has confirmed he wished to contest the vacant 155-pound title with another former champ, Conor McGregor.

Oliveira will instead undertake Islam Makhachev at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi on October 22 in a matchup of two fighters towards the summit of the lightweight division even though Makhachev presents an intriguing conundrum to resolve, Oliveira said recently that it isnt quite what he wanted.

I didnt want this fight. Everyone understands it, Oliveira said of the bout agreement he signed to defend myself against Makhachev.

I needed the big payment from another fight [McGregor]. However, everyone understands that Im a UFC employee. You cant escape that. So we tried to negotiate out of every angle. I tried NY since it was a neutral ground. However the fight was decided there [Abu Dhabi]. But in all honesty the cage may be the same all over the world.

Nonetheless, the Oliveira-Makhachev clash can be an interesting one, and pits two of the longest unbeaten streaks in UFC lightweight history against each other (Oliveira 11; Makhchev 10), though most will concur that Oliveira has faced a far higher amount of competition throughout their respective winning streaks.

McGregor, meanwhile, remains in preparation for his go back to the Octagon that is expected in the coming months and he could possibly be ideally positioned for a title episode of his own in a short time something would make Brazils Oliveira an extremely happy man if things go his way in October.
