Chicago officer Ella French, who was simply killed in the type of duty, honored by community twelve months later

On Aug. 7, 2021, Chicago officer Ella French was shot and killed in the type of duty throughout a traffic stop. Twelve months later, fellow officers, family and friends gathered on a rainy afternoon to keep in mind her and honor her life.

On days like today, when its an easy task to get lost in sadness, and perhaps anger, we have been called to keep in mind joy and gratitude, police Superintendent David Brown said. I really believe its what Ella could have wanted. She did what she loved doing and helped better peoples lives while she achieved it. Thats how exactly we remember Ella.

French, who was simply 29 when she was killed, have been doing work for the Chicago Police Department since April 2018. She was section of a residential area safety team tasked with patrolling dangerous neighborhoods.

The fatal shooting occurred near West 63rd Street and South Bell Avenue. French and two other officers, including Officer Carlos Yanez Jr., were conducting a traffic stop on three people in a car when one of these shot at the officers, said First Deputy police Superintendent Eric Carter your day following the shooting. A minumum of one of the officers returned fire, Carter said. Among the suspects was shot alongside Yanez and French.

Emonte Morgan was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer along with other charges. His brother, Eric Morgan, was charged with aggravated unlawful usage of a weapon and unlawful usage of a weapon by way of a felon and also one count of obstructing justice. The 3rd person in the SUV had not been charged.

At Sundays memorial, attendees hugged. Some held on tightly to tissues. Some wore pins with Frenchs face in it. A female carried flowers. The elements a reliable, unrelenting rain echoed the mood.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot was in attendance aswell. French was the initial Chicago officer to be shot and killed while working since Lightfoot became mayor in 2019.

Officer French was truly the epitome of what this means to be called to serve, to be called to provide of oneself in sacrifice, Lightfoot said. As anyone who knew Officer French would let you know, she was simply ideal for this role. Her kind and loving and caring nature, paired with her bright spirit, made her a joy to be around also to use.

Today we thank Officer French for choosing to greatly help protect our city. We also always thank and remember her mother, Elizabeth, a paragon of strength and resilience, Lightfoot added.

Im a mother myself, and I obtain it: This just had not been the natural progression of how things ought to be losing a kid.

Im here to inform you that, today and always, your daughter Ella French is really a star between the stars, and she’ll shine bright always for the girl she was, the life span she lived and the sacrifice she designed to protect the town of Chicago, Marmolejo said. Among those names etched on stone behind us, officer Ella French will forever be respected, honored and, most of all, never forgotten.

Down a pebble path and past a statue of a guy in a wheelchair surrounded by family honoring catastrophically injured officers there exists a circular concrete wall with the names of cops who’ve died in the type of duty etched into black granite. The most recent inscription reads Ella Grace French.
