China sends university students to quarantine under zero-COVID

BEIJING (AP) Almost 500 students at Chinas premier college for broadcast journalists have already been delivered to a quarantine center following a couple of COVID-19 cases were detected within their dormitory.

The 488 students at Communication University of China, alongside 19 teachers and five assistants, were transferred by bus beginning Friday night.

Quarantining anyone thought to have been around in contact with somebody who tested positive for the herpes virus is a pillar of Chinas zero-COVID policy. The quarantine centers include field hospitals, in addition to converted stadiums and exhibition centers that have already been criticized for overcrowding, poor sanitation and spoiled food.

By the other day, approximately 65 million Chinese residents were under lockdown, despite just 1,248 new cases of domestic transmission being reported on Sunday. The majority of those were asymptomatic.

The lockdowns have sparked protests online and confrontations with health workers and police, and also have exacted a significant toll on the economy, affecting global supply chains for electronics along with other products. The weekslong lockdown in Chinas biggest city of Shanghai on the summer prompted an exodus of migrant workers and foreign people, the repercussions which have yet to be felt.

With the release of economic data this week, analysts will undoubtedly be searching for insights into how Chinas handling of the pandemic is impacting economic activity in the worlds second-largest economy. Lockdowns have already been associated with nearly daily testing, travel restrictions and the suspension of classes at all levels.

China has pursued the relentless enforcement of the policy, even while just about any other country has sought to come back on track life by using vaccines and drugs to fight the herpes virus.

Zero-COVID is closely connected with President and Communist Party leader Xi Jinping, resulting in accusations that the federal government has politicized a public health crisis. His administration has rejected statements from the planet Health Organization that the policy is unsustainable, and contains refused to approve foreign vaccines which are widely considered far better than those made by Chinese companies.

Xi, who have not traveled abroad because the start of pandemic in early 2020, has had control of most levers of power and struck a confrontational tone in foreign policy, while sidelining or imprisoning rivals. He’s got eliminated term limits on the presidency and is likely to get a third five-year term as Communist leader at next months party congress.
