The Big Tens college football party resumes Thursday night on FOX!
James Franklins Penn State Nittany Lions (-3.5 at FOX Bet, O/U 52) roll into West Lafayette, Ind., to handle the Purdue Boilermakers, a team that finished 9-4 last season after an enthralling victory over Tennessee in the Music City Bowl.
My questionthisseason is easy: Can Purdue repeat?
The Boilermakers havent pieced together back-to-back winning seasons since 2006 and 2007, so its fair to be skeptical in regards to a program that hasnt experienced sustained success in a few time.
“Super senior” quarterback Aidan OConnell returns for Purdue, but a lot of his weaponry is over. The Boilermakers had to displace their top three receivers, including first-team All-American David Bell, who caught 93 balls for nearly 1,300 yards and six touchdowns.
Heir apparent wideout Broc Thompson went off for 217 yards in the Music City Bowl, but defense was optional in what quickly converted into a track talk with 93 points and 1,297 total yards of offense.
Thats not likely to happen against Penn State.
The Nittany Lions are perennially tough in the secondary. In addition they recreate future NFLer PJ Mustipher [64″, 325] in the trenches after he elected to utilize his extra year of eligibility to come back for the upcoming season.
Lets remember that Penn State started 5-0 this past year and led 17-3 at No. 3 Iowa, but Mustipher blew out his knee, and quarterback Sean Clifford exited the overall game with a rib injury he battled through for all of those other campaign.
Iowa escaped with a victory, and Penn State never recovered.
Both players are back, which can only help set the tone for a Nittany Lions squad thats clearly attempting to shake the idea that theyve underachieved during the last 2 yrs in the Big Ten.
I also spoke to several professional bettors down on Purdue and you will be seeking to short the team a lot. Its tough to disagree with those sentiments, given just how much the Boilermakers exceeded expectations and just how much offensive firepower they need to replace.
Lets buy low on Franklins bunch and lay the points.
PICK: Penn State (-3.5, +100 at FOX Bet) to win by a lot more than 3.5 points
YTD: 2-0 (NU 1H, NU)
