Colorado officer killed while working, suspect in custody

A 27-year-old officer was killed Sunday morning outside Denver, the authorities department said.

Arvada OFFICER Dillon Michael Vakoff was giving an answer to a big family disturbance with another officer early Sunday, police said.

The officers attained a chaotic scene with several people in the pub, Police Chief Link Strate said at a news conference Sunday. Police were called concerning the disturbance at about 1: 45 a.m., NBC affiliate KUSA of Denver reported.

Officers tried to split up several individuals who were “belligerent” when someone shot a lady, Strate said.

The officers and the shooter then exchanged gunfire, and the shooter struck Vakoff, killing him. The next officer tried to assist Vakoff, but he was pronounced dead at a healthcare facility.

Before he joined the department, Vakoff was an employee sergeant in the Air Force for six years, the authorities department said on Facebook.

A suspect, who was simply also shot in the gunfire exchange, is likely to survive and is in police custody. There is absolutely no threat to the city, police tweeted.

The feminine victim, who was simply taken up to a hospital, can be likely to survive. It’s unclear what her involvement in the incident was, Strate said.

A criminal investigation into Vakoffs death continues, Strate added.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement that his office “will continue steadily to monitor this example.”
