Commanding Respect: Washington Defense Impresses During Training Camp

Normally when going right through the first stages of practice, a coach should want his defense before his offense. Offensive systems may take time and energy to fully reach your final form, while defensive alignments are often more straight-forward.

Is a positive for the Washington Commandersin this first week of training camp? Commanders coach Ron Rivera certainly isn’t viewing it as a poor.

“Today was each day where (the defense) was a bit ahead (of the offense).” Rivera said post-practice Thursday. When youre not game-planning, youre not anticipating, not expecting specific forms of coverages for several situations. (Therefore), you might not have the (desired) success. Thats the tough part.

Washington continues to be getting acclimated with quarterback Carson Wentz commanding the huddle. Thursday was certainly a practice he hopes will undoubtedly be left previously. On the other hand, defenders like nickel corner Kendall Fuller and linebacker Jamin Davisare simply fine with the outcomes.

Fuller, among the team’s top defenders, split up two passes against slick slot receiver Curtis Samuel during seven-on-seven drills. Against second-year receiver Dyami Brown, Fuller close the gap, resulting in an incompletion and a lack of downs.

Davis, the team’s 2021 first-round pick, nearly intercepted Wentz during team drills on a pass designed for a running back on a screen. The play before, Wentz threw an interception directly into the hands of linebacker Cole Holcomb.

I thought the trunk seven had a genuine nice day, Rivera said. Plenty of revolved around the communications. We have been focusing on some (new) things

“I really was happy with what we got on the defensive side.

Washington’s defense was likely to be the explanation of growth in 2021. After making the postseason at 7-9 in 2020, the Commanders focused heavily on addressing the defensive concerns in free agency and the draft. They signed veterans William Jackson III and Bobby McCain to the secondary. In the draft, they targeted Davis on Day 1, and versatile defensive back Benjamin St-Juste in the 3rd round.

Minus a late-season surge, the Commanders’ defense ultimately was the team’s downfall. In early stages, the secondary struggled with consistency in coverage. Second-year defensive end Chase Young never found his footing following a breakout rookie season and ultimately missed the next half of the entire year with a torn ACL.

Rivera tries to get the positives in everything. Similarly, his defense is taking the steps needed to create off last season. On another, his offense must find balance if it hopes to contend for a postseason berth in 2022.

Thus the life span of an NFL roster during training camp. Each day differs. No wonder why the word “win your day” is frequently used among position coaches and coordinators.

We’d an excellent day, McCain said. We need to stack another at the top and continue at the top and another and another and another.
