Correa gives sister ‘perfect birthday’ –

August 14th, 2022

ANAHEIM — Saturday was an excellent day to be Carlos Correa‘s younger sister, Leibysand Correa. On her behalf brother’s dime, she surely got to fly to the LA area to celebrate her 14th birthday around her extended family at the ballpark.

She surely got to watch her your government homer and reach base five times, and she even surely got to watch her favorite player in the big leagues hit a house run, too. You see, those are two different players — because she’s a more impressive fan of Shohei Ohtani than she actually is of her very own brother.

Yep, such is Ohtani’s stature in the activity that even younger sister of 1 of his longtime divisional nemeses openly cheers for the two-way Angels superstar. All she wanted on her behalf birthday was an image with Ohtani, and Correa, being the household man he is, flew his parents and sister in from Puerto Rico to create her dreams become a reality prior to the Twins’ 11-inning loss.

“She visited the room yesterday evening and she had the most beautiful birthday, needless to say,” Correa said. “I hit a homer. Ohtani hit a homer. She surely got to meet him, took an image with him. It had been pretty much an ideal birthday on her behalf, in order that made me really happy.”

That proved the highlight of Correas weekend, too, because the Twins also lost Sundays series finale, 4-2, to drop to 2 1/2 back of Cleveland in the American League Central.

Before Saturdays game, Correa’s parents and sister waited in your community outside the clubhouses at Angel Stadium, hoping that Ohtani could have an opportunity to escape his pregame routine for that photo. Once the superstar appeared, Leiby actually kept her cool, got the photo she’d wished for and got her Ohtani jersey signed. (That is right: Both of Correa’s parents were wearing their son’s jersey to the overall game, but Leiby proudly wore a scarlet Ohtani jersey.)

Actually, she’s started learning how exactly to speak Japanese due to her Ohtani fandom, and she got an opportunity to practice her language skills with her idol (though Carlos had no idea what these were saying to one another).

So when soon as Ohtani left and the doors to the Angels clubhouse closed, Leiby broke down in sobs.

“Not crying — she was bawling,” Correa said. “She flooded the hall with her tears.”

One hour roughly later, Correa stepped to the plate and crushed his 14th homer of the entire year, an opposite-field blast to right-center. He was proud to possess hit his 14th homer on his sister’s 14th birthday. However in the eighth inning, his rival for his sister’s affection one-upped him by mashing a homer to center field — just out of reach of Byron Buxton — which loomed large in the Angels’ eventual comeback victory.

And in Correa’s mind, there is no question which of these homers Leiby enjoyed more.

“His, 100 percent,” Correa said. “She’s sick and tired of watching me hit home runs. She watches each one of my games. She’s never seen Ohtani live hitting a homer on her behalf birthday.”

Though Correa and Ohtani have been rival stars in the American League West for four seasons and had an agreeable relationship, the timing had never quite prearranged for Correa to bring his sister to a casino game contrary to the Angels and create that meeting.

And even though Leiby had joked leading in to the game that she hoped that Carlos would get yourself a hit but that Ohtani would win, Carlos didn’t go on it personally at all — because Ohtani may be the kind of player he wants her to idolize.

“Shes enthusiastic about him, and which makes me happy, because hes an excellent role model,” Correa said. “He’s a man that obviously is making history each and every night and hes only a great role model to possess, so on her behalf to look up to guy like him, its good.”

Correa’s parents and sister left Anaheim on Sunday, bound for Houston, where Leiby begins a fresh school year on Monday. It’s safe to state she’ll have a spring in her step.

“Im sure she’ll remember that one for a long period, and Im very appreciative of Ohtani taking his time and energy to have a picture with her because I understand how busy he could be and I understand everyone wants a bit of Ohtani,” Correa said. “Hes the largest superstar in this sport, so for him to walk out his way and present her a couple of minutes of his time, if you ask me, that means the planet.”
