NY Jets head coach Robert Saleh doesn’t plan to accede to Denzel Mims’ trade request.

Following Sunday’s 31-27 preseason victory on the GAMBLING, Saleh indicated Mims is “gonna be here so far as Im concerned.”

Ron Slavin, Mims’ agent, released a statement Thursday saying the 24-year-old wide receiver “doesn’t have another with the Jets” and wants out:

Statement from Ron Slavin, agent for #Jets WR Denzel Mims, requesting a trade or release for the 2020 second-round pick. Mims has 31 catches on 67 targets in 20 career games.

1 day later, Saleh addressed the story and said he previously a “excellent conversation” with Mims.

Robert Saleh spoke with Denzel Mims earlier today about his trade request:

Sunday’s game was both a means for Saleh and the coaching staff to send a note to Mims about his usage and a chance for the disgruntled wideout to showcase his skills for just about any potential trade suitors.

In either scenario, it had been mission accomplished. Mims was New York’s leading receiver, catching seven passes for 102 yards and something touchdown on eight targets.

Six targets. Six catches. One TD.

Denzel Mims boils down with the score

“Personally i think like Im better,” he told reporters. “I usually been in this manner, but today I acquired the opportunity to show it. I had a sickness this past year, therefore i didnt keep coming back the way I needed to.”

“This season, I had a complete offseason, no sickness, no injuries, therefore i feel good getting into this season. My first year, I had COVID, then this past year, I had a sickness, so it’s almost everything going right for once.”

Mims, a second-round pick in the 2020 draft, has 31 receptions for 490 yards in 20 appearances. His frustration is understandable because his career up to now hasn’t played out as anybody could have hoped.

But there’s still a while to show things around.

The Jets selected Garrett Wilson with the 10th overall pick but don’t possess a bevy of elite pass-catchers at their disposal. Pro Football Focus’ Ben Linsey ranked their receiving corps 18th heading in to the season.

NY shouldn’t jettison someone who can meaningfully help its passing game, and the chance should presumably be there for Mims to occupy the type of role he desires. If Sunday is any indication, then both parties will get exactly what they need.
