Digimon Survive, the brand new video game manufactured in celebration of the animes 25th anniversary, attempts to juggle being both a visual novel and a tactical role-playing game. The effect is really a slog of a casino game thats 70 percent visual novel, 20 percent tactical role-playing game, and 10 percent horror; totalling out as a 100 percent waste of my time.
Digimon Survive, produced by Hyde and Witchcraft, follows a bunch of teenagers on a school camping trip that are unceremoniously transported to a mysterious world where fantastical anthropomorphic creatures called Digimon run amok. If youre convinced that concept sounds eerily much like Pokmon, youd be right. Digimon would be to Pokmon what DreamWorks Pictures animated film Antz would be to Disneys Bugs Life other than most Digimon can speak. While nefarious Digimon in this new realm desire to utilize the kids for a ritualistic sacrifice, a little band of kind Digimon ensure it is their lifes mission to obtain them back safe.
Digimon Survive tries to fuse the visual novel design of dialogue choices with battle-related social links a la Persona, but its of low quality at either of these things.
Combat in the overall game works much like the turn-based combat system from Live A Live, where one can position your party members on a grid during fights. While their placement plays an integral role in how battles play out, the battle tactics in Digimon Survive have the ability to be both a cake walk and a slog. As is common generally in most TRPGs, attacking the medial side or the trunk of an enemy results in critical damage. The issue with Digimon Survive is that it requires forever for characters to visit across tiles in the games large battle arenas, even though you increase their animations by hitting the skip button. The majority of your movement will undoubtedly be spent getting within selection of the enemy, which based on the level of party members youre rocking with, may take up to four to five turns before the action happens.
Digimon Survives adventure and exploration side follows a visual novel formula of waving your cursor over objects and characters in the surroundings to find more reasons for having them. This, too, is suffering from being truly a needlessly arduous section of the game. Rarely does exploration reward you with items which help you in combat scenarios. I became inundated with health items I never needed because that has been a cakewalk aswell.
The teenagers and the Digimon in the overall game have the emotional fortitude of grade schoolers, that is honestly part of the games charm. Theres a relatable awkwardness to the direction they broach topics just like the children sleeping in separate rooms. But what became grating may be the Digimons ride or die affection because of their human counterparts. Similar to the original Digimon anime, the digital monsters care deeply about their human counterparts. Theyll mamoru the hell out of em. But Digimon the show forges a believable bond between your pair. The strengthening of said bonds is what leads the anthropomorphic creatures with their evolution into better beings. In Digimon Survive, evolutions just kinda happened outta left field in probably the most ham-fisted way imaginable. Although some Digimon, just like the simple-minded overgrown reptile Agumon, evolve after witnessing you make an effort to protect them, all of those other Digimons evolutions come following a pep talk the Digimon give their human counterparts. That is eye-rolling to state minimal and feels unearned whenever an evolution cutscene interrupts an already slow battle.
You see, Digimon just know everything there’s to learn about their partners and will tell them just what they have to hear to place a fire within their bellies and battle on. This boils right down to platitudes where Digimon tell their partners just how much they love them and how special they’re. The only real problem is that you because the player whos been farting around with one of these bland characters all night havent been given an iota of characterization, therefore the compliments dont really land. As the games camera is letting you know that is an emotional breakthrough moment, it comes off as characterization that the Digimon are taking out of these un-drawn asses.
But surely the characters breathe life into what’s so far a fairly subpar TRPG experience, right? I regret to see you that theyre the worst part. If youve ever seen japan reality Television show Terrace House, specifically its Tokyo 2019 to 2020 season, Id say the dynamic wayward teenagers act like that. Theres a couple of downtime despite characters being made aware that we now have Digimon attempting to make sacrifices out of these and characters walk on eggshells around one another until an incident occurs where each of them inevitably air out their grievances. Youve got a cast of archetypes: the meek girl, the favorite girl, the dude with a stick up his butt, the jokester, and the guy who doesnt have anything positive to state. Rather than the drama that could ensue when larger-than-life personalities are forced to interact, the characters in Digimon Survive are bland cut-outs of character archetypes with out a semblance of depth.
The drama between characters isnt compelling either. In a single moment, characters will protest against looking for answers on earth theyve been transported into. Within the next, theyre up in arms about your inaction as the rest of these go out toI dont know, discover the script for the overall game to allow them to know very well what the hell is being conducted. Characters will putz around looking forward to the plot to occur to them. However when as soon as occurs, theyre all surprised Pikachu face over how their inaction has affected the party. Even though a lesson feels as though its going to be learned following a long diatribe about having to communicate better collectively, the teens immediately regress into ignoring flagrant warning flag about each other.
To create matters worse, the characters act halt progress in the overall game while its villains push the plot forward. Playing Digimon Survive felt like reading on the shoulder of someone whos taking too much time to show the page. All night at a time, characters either talk circles around their problems with one another or take a seat on their hands without taking action to have the plot moving. This causes the visual novel choices to feel pedantic.
As the devs practically begged reviewers never to spoil whatever happens following the games fifth chapter hoping of preserving the surprising emotional twists and turns the story provides, the plot point only tripled down in frustrating me. I began to actively root for characters to meet up their demise due to how demonstrably ineffective the group collectively made my choices feel. It is possible to promise to become a deeply personal story all youd like, but easily would prefer to you need to be spoiled than to endure playing your game to attain its conclusion, then your journey isnt worthwhile.
