Donovan Mitchell Trade grades: Who won the trade between your Cavaliers and Knicks

Alright. I believe we finally have the solution to every question we’d this offseason.

Kevin Durant didnt become traded, so thats settled. Now we also know where Donovan Mitchell is certainly going, too. The solution may be the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Jazz just earned a truly massive haul for his or her 3-time All-Star. It offers several unprotected draft picks, a few pick swaps between your two teams, a prospect in Ochai Agbaji and veteran players in Colin Sexton and Lauri Markkanen.

The trade arrived of nowhere on Thursday with ESPNs Adrian Wojnarowksi breaking the news headlines.

Full trade: Utah is trading Donovan Mitchell to Cleveland for Lauri Markkanen, Ochair Agbaji, Collin Sexton, three unprotected first-round picks and two pick swaps, sources tell ESPN.

Given that we realize what the offer appears like, lets break it down.

Heres the entire trade.

THE CAVS GET:Donovan Mitchell

THE JAZZ GET:Colin Sexton via sign-and-trade on a 4-year, $72 million deal, Lauri Markkanen and Ochai Agbaji.

On the pick side, they get:

  • 3 unprotected 1st round picks in 2025, 2027 and 2029
  • 2 pick swaps in 2026 and 2028

Lets dive in to the grades.

That one is tough to grade. It feels as though theres no question the Cavaliers just improved with this particular trade. However when you really consider it? That is pretty risky.

The Cavaliers had 3 lineups altogether that played at the very least 40 minutes together and had a collective net rating of +15.0 or better. Lauri Markkanen was in two of these. It gets better. The combo of Ricky Rubio, Darius Garland, Markkanen, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen was a collective +40.6 on the entire year. The sample is small they only played 41 minutes together through 13 games. Nonetheless it worked. Itreally worked. And today, its gone. Sacrificed to create in a little scoring guard in Mitchell who doesnt defend at a higher level.

And, look. Mitchell is good. You dont turn into a 3-time All-Star without having to be excellent especially in the West. But his backcourt pairing with Garland is questionable. The tiny guard thing didnt work defensively with Sexton, why would it not work here? Thats an acceptable question to ask and something well be saddled with all season long.

But, hey. When you’re able to go out and obtain another All-Star to increase roster with two already at hand? You go take action. The Cavs are stacked plus they should fight for homecourt in the East. The talent will there be.

Thats why it is a B.

I believe this can be a good trade on the Jazzs part. These were very clearly only in this thing for picks and theyve got what they wanted.

They own the Cavaliers future through 2029 and theres no guarantee Donovan Mitchell will hang in there following the summer of 2025 when he is able to opt out of his deal. Theyve found an excellent trade partner here and today have 13 massive picks showing for this.

Cleveland is sending its three unprotected picks to Utah in 2025, 2027 and 2029 and picks swaps in 2026 and 2028, sources tell ESPN. Together with the Rudy Gobert trade with Minnesota, Utah has gathered 13 unprotected or lightly protected picks through 2029.

The only real reason this isnt an A over the board is basically because I simply feel just like had they waited a little longer and allowed the Knicks to obtain a bit more desperate, they couldve had a deal done there. And the Knicks will be a much, much worse team despite having Mitchell at hand.

Dont obtain it twisted. The Jazz made out very well. Theres just this nagging feeling they could have gone something up for grabs.

Regardless, the near future continues to be bright in Utah.
