ESPN reporter M.A. Voepel — who’s been covering sports for the outlet for a lot more than 2 decades — has turn out as transgender … saying Tuesday, “I’m transitioning to male.”

Voepel said he made a decision to start about his true self this week because he’s slated to get the Naismith Hall of Fame’s Gowdy Award the following month — an honor recognizing media members who’ve made great contributions to basketball — and he wished to be there “as authentic self.”

“Fear will keep us paralyzed for many years, particularly when we think we shall lose all that’s dear to us, including career,” Voepel said.

In sports media, we’re lucky to inform stories of others journeys. We’ve our very own, too. Section of mine has been transgender, and I’m transitioning to male. Byline now M.A. Voepel, pronouns he/him. Please feel absolve to call me Voepel, MV, Michael, Mike; Im good using them all.
