Two former Minneapolis cops who have been found guilty on federal charges of violating the civil rights of George Floyd were sentenced to prison Wednesday.
A judge sentenced J. Alexander Kueng to 3 years and Tou Thao to three . 5 years for his or her roles in Floyd’s 2020 death. Both may also be necessary to complete 2 yrs of supervised release when their prison sentences end.
Kueng and Thao were convicted in February of depriving Floyd of his civil rights while acting under government authority if they didn’t give him medical aid, and in addition of not intervening to avoid their fellow officer Derek Chauvin from using excessive force.
The other day, a federal judge ruled that guidelines for Kueng and Thaos sentences will be calculated in a manner that would reduce their potential prison time. Both headed into Wednesdays hearing with a recommended sentencing selection of 4 1/4 years to 5 1/4 years.
Kueng and Thao still face state charges ofaiding and abetting second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, in an effort set for late October.
ON, MAY 25, 2020, Kueng, Thao, Chauvin and former Minneapolis officer Thomas Lane had taken care of immediately a call in regards to a counterfeit bill from the convenience store in Minneapolis Powderhorn Park neighborhood if they encountered Floyd, 46.
Lane and Kueng, both rookie officers and partners on the decision, were along with Floyd, a Black man, as Chauvin applied deadly pressure to Floyds neck and he gasped for air. Thao have been responsible for crowd control. Floyd‘s death spurred protests against systemic racism all over the world.
Kueng didn’t speak through the hearing.
Thao spoke for roughly 20 minutes before his sentence was passed down, making multiple references to his Christian faith in the often meandering address. He didn’t mention Floyd nor did he directly address Floyd’s friends and family within court.
Throughout this two year journey, Ive never seen so much corruption in this instance,” Thao told the court. “I thought this is Hollywood.
By the end of his statement, Thao said that as a father of three, he could plead for mercy, but said he instead wished to ask his friends to show to God to save lots of their souls.
Courteney Ross, George Floyds girlfriend, said she was disappointed in the sentences and offended by Thao’s comments.
“Im a Christian and there is room in court for what he was doing,” Ross said. “He showed no remorse. Not a little.
Attorneys for Keung and Thao asked Magnuson to take into account in sentencing them they have been following Chauvins orders, as he was responsible for the scene.
Chauvin pleaded guilty in December to violating Floyds rights and was sentenced July 7 to just more a lot more than 20 years in federal prison. That sentence will run concurrently with the 22-year sentence he could be serving after being found guilty of second- andthird-degree murder, along with second-degree manslaughter, in circumstances case.
Lane was sentenced July 21 to 2 1/2 years in prison on a federal civil rights charge for his role in Floyds death. He’s got pleaded guilty on state charges and faces a hearing in September on those charges.
