The amount of students choosing to sit A-level computing has been increasing in the last four years, in accordance with statistics from the Joint Council for Qualifications.

In 2022, 15,693 students thought we would sit the A-level computing exam, an 11.27% increase from 13,829 the prior year.

Though students were not able to sit physical exams in 2020 because of pandemic shutdowns, there have been still more computing A-level candidates than in 2019, increasing from 11,124 in 2019 to 12,426 the next year.

Gareth Stockdale, CEO of Micro:bit Educational Foundation, said: Computing has generated itself as a core subject at A-level, with an increase of students choosing to review it than French and English Language. Its continuing to cultivate too, with a 17.6% upsurge in student numbers this season.

That is fantastic progress for a topic that was only introduced to the curriculum in 2014, checking rewarding careers to more folks and giving a much-needed boost to the countrys digital skills.

Not merely may be the technology sector without skilled workers, but gleam insufficient women, with the amount of women creating technical roles in the united kingdom only increasing by 1% during the past five years.

With regards to the gender split of pupils choosing to sit A-level computing exams, female students now take into account almost 15% of candidates, a rise of 15.8% year-on-year, from 2,031 in 2021 to 2,352 this season.

But girls remain significantly outnumbered by the 13,341 male candidates who thought we would take the topic this season and in lots of other science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects, the amount of female candidates decreased this season.

Agata Nowakowska, area vice-president of Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Skillsoft, described it as a disappointing trend which might indicate the growth of ladies in tech on the next five years could be just as slow.

As the technology industry is growing rapidly, a diversity gap remains. Currently, women constitute just 17% of the united kingdom tech sector, signalling little growth during the last decade, he said. Its disappointing to note that this trend is defined to continue, with this particular years A-level results showing the percentage of girls taking maths, further maths and physics has decreased this season.

The Covid-19 pandemic meant that 2020 and 2021 grades were calculated without students taking paper-based exams utilizing a combination of data including mock exam results, coursework grades, teacher predictions and centre assessment grades submitted by schools and colleges.

This season, students found themselves back the exam room, with many speculating this is exactly what has resulted in a year-on-year drop in grade attainment.

There is a year-on-year drop atlanta divorce attorneys degree of grade attainment this season. For instance, only 14.5% of students achieved an Agrade this season, whereas 19.9% achieved exactly the same bring about 2021, and 76.5% of students achieved at the very least a C grade in 2022, instead of 87.2% the prior year.

But most are claiming the real comparison ought to be between this years grades and the ones achieved in 2019, prior to the pandemic, when students were sitting traditional exams.

When you compare 2022 and 2019, those achieving higher grades is continuing to grow significantly, from 3.4% in 2019 to 14.5% in 2022 for Agrades, and from 63.3% in 2019 to 76.5% in 2022 for all those achieving at the very least a C or above.

Some tech industry professionals are encouraging pupils to check beyond their A-level grades and, if necessary, pursue other routes into tech than university.

Kelly Nicholls, CEO of TechSkills, a TechUK company, said: Whilst a qualification route is fantastic in the event that you achieve the entry requirements, there are various other ways right into a tech career. For instance, a qualification apprenticeship can be an exciting, highly motivational earn-as-you-learn alternative without university fees.

The tech industry wants new talent across all sectors to fill an easy selection of job roles. You dont have to be a skilled or talented tech person to gain access to tech courses. When you have the passion and drive to understand new skills, it is possible to thrive in the topic. We anticipate a far more diverse cohort of students selecting a career in tech later on.
