Francis Ngannou: Ciryl Gane looked great at UFC Fight Night 209, but ‘it’s very difficult to be impressed’

Francis Ngannou quickly admitted Ciryl Gane looked great at UFC Fight Night 209, however the UFC heavyweight champion said its difficult to be too impressed with someone he already beat.

In the initial UFC event ever in his home country, Frances Gane (11-1 MMA, 8-1UFC) defeated Tai Tuivasa (15-4 MMA, 8-4UFC) via third-round knockout in a wild barn burner. Ngannou (17-3 MMA, 12-2 UFC), who also offers spent significant time surviving in France, was present cage-side for the chaotic main event contender fight.

That fight was very electric, though, Ngannou said on the ESPN+ post-fight show. There have been good actions in the fight. At some time, you start to see the fight was half-half and it switched back again to Ciryls side, that is what I thought. So far as distance, hes proficient at controlling that and he could apply that in the fight tonight. You can observe your body (shots), thats what got him the victory. It had been exactly like strategic, technical kind of fight.

The newest title challenger for Ngannous UFC heavyweight strap was his former training partner Gane. Both big men fought at UFC 270 in January. Ngannou found a unanimous decision win, which explains why hispraise for Gane can only just go up to now.

I understand hes an excellent fighter, Ngannou said. Its hard to react to that question for the guy that I beat if Im impressed with him. Hes here for grounds. I fought him for grounds because he was most likely the No. 1 contender. Yes, hes good, but Im the champ. Yeah, so its very difficult to be impressed.

While Gane asserted himself because the No. 1 UFC-ranked contender at heavyweight, Ngannou talks about a variety of choices for his next fight. With Stipe Miocic and Jon Jones seemingly nearing returns, Ngannou has options though nothing set yet as he continues to recuperate from knee surgery.

I dont have any whispers at this time, Ngannou said. I dont have any timeline or exact timeline for the return. Im likely to start to see the doctor seven days from now. Im following up with the physician to observe how its going. But its going very good. But you need to give it time. Its nothing like its likely to be great. Its been five months. (I have to) sort of have some additional time.
