1. The movie was originally called Cheer Fever.

2. Compiled by music video directorJessica Bendinger, the script was a difficult sell and almost didn’t get made. “I visited 28 or even more places and meetings,” she told MTV News in 2015. “I had about 27 pitches because sometimes I’d visit a studio and they’d think it’s great and they’d go on it with their boss plus they go, ‘We think it’s great!’ and go on it their boss and it would get yourself a pass at the 3rd time.”

3.Despite being perhaps one of the most in-demand actresses of her generation, Kirsten Dunst wasn’t the initial person to really have the section of Torrance. No, that might be Marley Shelton, who find yourself ditching the movie to star in Sugar and Spice, the 2001 film about cheerleaders-turned-bank robbers. Oh my.

4. Dunst, who was simply 17 at that time, was always a high choice for the producers, though she had turned them down many times before finally taking the part aftershooting “depressing, bad indie film,” she told MTV News. “I read it and was like, ‘Oh, it is a fun movie.'”

5. The inspiration for Gabrielle Union‘s Isis, the captain of the East Compton Clovers, was JORDAN. NBD. And Reed revealed to Buzzfeed that Union was “instrumental” to find the character’s voice.”We worked a whole lot on her behalf character whenever we were doing revisions for the script,” he said.

6. There is an extremely pointed reason Union, who had previously appeared in teen hits 10 Things I Hate About You and She’s All That, signed to the movie. “The cheerleading movie I needed about bank robbing [Sugar and Spice]they didn’t desire to go Black on the characters,” she revealed to MTV. “So it is interesting, the group that didn’t desire to invest in diversity didn’t appear to prosper and the movie that has been about righting the wrongs did well, and that included diversity.”

7. James Franco and Jason Schwartzman were just two of the actors who read for Cliff, Torrance’s edgy rocker love interest. However the top pick was Jesse Bradford, who was simply just a little hesitant to to remain. “That is after we’ve auditioned 300 people for Cliff and nobody have been like Jesse,” executive producerMax Wong told MTV. “Hewas like, ‘Can I get yourself a convertible?’ And I was like, ‘Of course!’ That was a complete lie.”

8. For Missy, Cliff’s sister and Torrance’s unexpected co-captain with a penchant for gymnastics and temporary tattoos, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’sEliza Duskhu was Reed’s only option. And she didn’t disappoint when she arrived at the audition. “I really believe I was just a little hungover and I was dressed up in all black,” Dushku revealed to MTV.“[Reed]said, ‘Can you execute a split?’ And I said, ‘I have no idea, i want to try,’ and I popped right into a split there and thought, hey, maybe. You understand, that’s cool.”

9. The members of the R&B girl group Blaque, Shamari DeVoe, Brandi Williams and the late Natina Reed, were offered the elements of three East Compton Clovers, no audition necessary. “We were at the height of our career,” DeVoe told the Observer. “And we were represented by Johnny Wright and Lisa Lopes, she was our mentor and had creative control. We were hot plus they reached out to us.”

Since it was their film debut, they considered Union for guidance. “It had been their first-time acting, period,” Union told MTV. “So teaching them about marks and where in fact the light is and where in fact the cameras areIt was among those movies where everyone wished to obtain it right and individuals were focused on humbling themselves to accomplish the task. If it took a village, it took a village.”

10. The trailer for TAKE IT On features scenes with theClovers not featured in the film itself. “We shot these snippets that you see…following the movie wrapped because once test audiences saw the movie, they wanted more of the Clovers,” Union said on TikTok in January 2022. “So we shot these, limited to the trailer, not for the movie, to create people think we were in the movie a lot more than we were.”

11. Among the movie’s most iconic scenesthe teeth-brushing flirtation between Torrance and Cliffwasn’t in the initial script, but was inspired by way of a real-life moment. “I recall just studying him and what he was doing, also it had not been very cute,”writer Bendinger told MTV of her very own awkward bathroom encounter having an unnamed suitor. “I recall sitting in my own apartment and I was like, think about this?”

But Dunst improv’d one key part. “Kirsten developed an excellent thing about shielding the medial side of her mouth from him when she’s spitting that i thought was just great,” Reed spilled. “That has been all Kirsten.”

12. The majority of choreographer Sparky Polastri’s lines were improvised at that moment byactor Ian Roberts and Reed, who told Buzzfeed, “That role in the initial script was funny but thin and stereotypical.” The spirit fingers, however, were scripted.

13.Many of the cast members were arrested in Tjiuana during filming, including Dushku and Bradford.”[They] were on the beach drinking and got arrested and got thrown into Mexican jail,” Wong revealed to MTV News.

“I wish to continue the record and say no producers came and bailed us out,” Dushku clarified. “There might have been an incident in TJ one weekend but we got ourselves from it. I acquired us from it and there is no producer bailing out happening.”

14. The majority of the cast experienced a four-week cheerleading training ahead of filming.

“Not merely did we need to learn the dance routine and the cheers, but we also did all our very own stunts,” Nicole Bilderback, who played Toros member Whitney, told Bustle. “So we’d to understand the pyramids; we’d to develop strength for that. We’d to learn all of the tosses. We learned all that stuff. So that it was eight hours each day, and we’d get yourself a lunch break. It had been tough. It had been plenty of work.”

15. Securing the rights to Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” for a little part of the auditions montage would cut outasignificant level of the film’s tight $10 million budget.

“My memory was that it cost $40,000,” Reed recalled in his Buzzfeed interview. “That has been the single biggest music cue and expense we’d in the movie.”

16. To create it using one of the squads, there is no faking it when it found your resume.

We made everybody arrived at the audition having prepared some type of a cheer, essentially the most humiliating thing you can do to an actor,” Reed told DVD News. “We had a need to know they at the very least had some sense of rhythm and coordination because not merely did they have to act, however they had a need to meet up with the physical demands of the roles.”

17. Lin-Manuel Miranda co-wrote the music and lyrics for TAKE IT On: The Musical, which ran on Broadway for a restricted engagement in 2012. It receivedtwo Tony nominations in 2013 for “Best Musical” and “Best Choreography.”

18. The majority of the routines performed by the Toros and the Clovers featured stunts which are considered illegal in senior high school competitions.

“You can find illegal moves,” Reedconfirmed within an interview with HuffPost. “There are several collegiate moves within that aren’t senior high school moves…that could oftimes be disqualified. At that time, whenever we were making the movie, if one of these brilliant things came up, we erred privately of what realy works dramatically or what worked best for all of us visually.” That’s alright, that’s OK around!

19. The film’s ending was a spot of contention on the list of filmmakers, as there is a divide when it found which cheer squad should win Nationals. Spoiler alert: The Clovers would collect the trophy.

“I recall there was a complete debate about who was simply likely to win, and there have been people in the mix which were like, ‘Well, Kirsten’s the lead, the Toros need to win,'” Reed recalled to MTV. “Well, nah, that isn’t the story…they did an incredible job. However they came in second to another team, also it was a life lesson on her behalf.”

20. Following the movie surprisingly debuted at No. 1, attracting $22 million domestically when initial tracking reports indicated it could make just $6 million, a few of the starsresponded in epic fashion.

“A great number of girls and I went out to celebrate and could or might not, you understand, have jumped in the pool at Sky Bar and were like, we’ve lots one movie!” Dushku revealed to MTV.

21. The DVD includes another ending that finds Torrance and Isis both attending U.C. Berkeley and on the cheerleading squad together.
