Greene negotiates exit as Auburn athletic director

Allen Greene will “step away” from his role as Auburn athletic director, it had been announced Friday.

Your choice was announced following the two sides negotiated terms of Greene’s departure early in the day, sources told ESPN.

“Your choice to step from Auburn athletics isn’t a straightforward one, nonetheless it may be the right time for me personally to begin the next phase in my own professional journey,” Greene said in a statement released by the institution. “I’m very pleased with the work that people did together to go our athletics program forward.

“… I wish Auburn only the very best in the years ahead. I’m confident we leave Auburn athletics more powerful than whenever we arrived.”

Greene was entering the ultimate five months of his contract, that is a rarity among athletic directors at major conference schools. Greene had asked Auburn for clarity about his future along with his deal expiring in January, sources told ESPN, and he was told that Auburn was more likely to wait before end of football season to create a decision.

That resulted in Greene finding an exit strategy, sources told ESPN.

Greene was hired from Buffalo in January 2018 by Auburn, becoming the school’s first Black athletic director. During Greene’s tenure, Auburn reached two College World Series in baseball and your final Four in men’s basketball, and had significant growth in capital projects and facilities. Auburn is amid creating a $92 million football facility, that is slated to open later this season.

Issues in the football program have lingered, however. The institution fired coach Gus Malzahn in December 2020 and struggled to locate a replacement, partly due to Auburn’s reputation for administrative dysfunction.

Greene led the search that yielded coach Bryan Harsin, whose tenure has been shrouded by an “inquiry” by the university. That inquiry has since become considered the institution fishing for grounds to fire Harsin for cause. Nothing was found, but Harsin has spent months fighting Auburn’s self-inflicted damage from the inquiry.

Harsin is widely considered coaching for his job this year, also it was widely considered unlikely that Greene will be unlikely to function as athletic director to find out his fate.

“Allen arrived on The Plains with vision, passion and experience to raise Auburn athletics to another level,” university president Dr. Christopher Roberts said in a statement. “In the brief time that I’ve worked alongside Allen as president, he’s got shown to be a secured asset to Auburn, enhancing our athletics programs and facilities, and contains been focused on our student-athletes, to integrity also to our university. We’re grateful for his commitment and contributions to Auburn in the last four . 5 years.”

Greene is really a former Notre Dame baseball player who developed a solid reputation in the athletics industry as he worked his way up the faculty athletics ladder being an assistant AD at Ole Miss to Buffalo, where he was a deputy and the athletic director, before coming to Auburn in 2018.
