Gov. Charlie Baker spoke from Sunday concerning the arrival of about 50 migrants on Marthas Vineyard the other day, placing blame on Washington lawmakers for the screwed up U.S. immigration system.
Sending people from coast to coast, a lot of whom do not know why theyre being sent where theyre going, isnt a remedy to the screwed up immigration system we’ve in the U.S., Baker said, in accordance with NBC10 Boston.
The migrants arrived on the island last Wednesday via two charter planes that began their journey in Texas. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took credit for the transport.
Baker didn’t respond right to DeSantis on Sunday, though he was critical of the U.S. immigration system.
Its not just a secret to anyone who our immigration system is broken, and its own not just a secret that the border can be broken because our immigration system is broken, Baker said, in accordance with Commonwealth Magazine. The states cant correct it. So any conversation with any governor doesnt really get me anywhere.
He also urged federal lawmakers to pass legislation improving immigration policies.
Washington must do its job, and its own job would be to develop an immigration policy thats enforceable, that works, and that folks understand, he said, in accordance with NBC10.
On Friday, the migrants were voluntarily moved to Joint Base Cape Cod, a military base in Sandwich with a Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency-designated emergency shelter. The Executive Office of Public Security and safety tweeted a video of JBCC Sunday, showing bunk bed-filled bedrooms, a cafeteria, and a recreation room.
Stumping for a gubernatorial candidate at a rally in Kansas this weekend, DeSantis said Massachusetts deported those individuals off the island the next day, in accordance with NBC10. USA.gov defines deportation because the formal removal of a foreign national from the U.S.
DeSantiss office also doubled down on Floridas immigration relocation program in a Friday release, saying this program seeks to recognize illegal immigrants at the southern border who’ve been processed by the feds and connect them with voluntary opportunities to attain sanctuary destinations and high-wealth areas that support Bidens open border policies, welcome immigrants, and also have significant resources to look after they.
However, DeSantiss migrant strategy has raised numerous legal questions, with some contacting the Department of Justice and state police to research possible human trafficking, kidnapping, and false imprisonment charges.
Lawyers for Civil Rights, a nonprofit that now represents a lot more than 30 of the Marthas Vineyard migrants, said its clients were lured onto the planes with false promises of careers, schooling, and immigration assistance.
The business, which said its staff and volunteers have already been threatened and harassed and its own website sabotaged, has called on U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins and Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey to open criminal investigations in to the stunt.
In its letter to Healey, the business wrote that those behind the transport preyed on the vulnerability of our clients a lot of whom had suffered deep trauma within their home countries and on the journeys to america and exploited this vulnerability to win trust through false promises.
