iPhone 14 Review: AN EXCELLENT Upgrade for many people

This story is section of CENTER POINT iPhone 2022, CNET’s assortment of news, advice around Apple’s hottest product.

The iPhone 14 is both a noticable difference on last year’s iPhone 13 and something of the very most minimal year-over-year upgrades in Apple’s history. Externally, the 14 inherits the iPhone 13’s old flat-sided aluminum design. Inside, Apple essentially repackaged the iPhone 13 Pro, sans the telephoto camera and high-refresh-rate screen. The effect is lovely and the iPhone 14 is a great upgrade for many people.

The iPhone 14 starts at $799 (including a $30 connectivity discount in the event that you activate it with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon), exactly the same price because the iPhone 12 and 13 if they first continued sale. If you are longing for more significant improvements, there’s the more costly iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, both which are filled with updates.

iPhone 14 off-contract price breakdown

Storage US price UK price AU price
128GB $829 849 AU$1,399
256GB $929 959 AU$1,579
512GB $1,129 1,179 AU$1,899

As Americans grapple with inflation, some companies have kept costs exactly the same by supplying a little less. The iPhone 14 appears like a means for Apple release a a fresh phone while maintaining last year’s price. Is this an incident of “shrinkflation“? Maybe, however, not necessarily.

The iPhone 14 reminds me of the iPhone 5C, which arrived in 2013 alongside the iPhone 5S. The 5C was basically an iPhone 5 in the new plastic body that has been meant to interest a far more budget-minded audience. While there are several similarities, the 14 appears to be targeted at balancing price and adding new features.

As the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have the flashiest new features, you can forget the improvements Apple designed to the iPhone 14.

Apple added several safety tools to the 14 including Crash Detection and satellite connectivity for sending emergency messages if you are out of selection of a cell tower. The iPhone 14 also got an interior redesign that helps dissipate heat better and allows its glass back again to be repaired easier and for less overall.

But they are features a lot of people will hopefully never use and they are largely invisible. Even the iPhone’s move from physical SIM cards to eSIM on US models is something a lot of people will only cope with once when transferring their number.

  • Main camera upgrade is excellent
  • Autofocus makes selfies look better
  • Improved repairability is welcomed
  • Action mode is smooth

  • Ultrawide photos certainly are a step down in image quality
  • Year-over-year upgrades are minimal
  • Videos recorded in low light look just OK

Decreasing upgrade may be the new larger version of the iPhone 14, called the iPhone 14 Plus. With exactly the same sized 6.7-inch screen because the 14 Pro Max, the iPhone 14 Plus should interest individuals who want a big phone but don’t desire to spend $1,099. However, the 14 Plus will not be out until Oct. 7.

The iPhone 14 continues on sale Friday, Sept. 16, and happens to be designed for preorder.

iPhone 14 features

Familiarity can be an underrated quality, and the iPhone 14 is filled up with it. The 6.1-inch OLED screen gets the same Ceramic Shield, screen notch and matte-finished aluminum because the iPhone 13. Also it weighs 17% significantly less than the iPhone 14 Pro, despite being nearly identical in proportions. That lighter weight makes the 14 a joy to carry and use with or with out a case.

The iPhone 14 is rated IP68 for water- and dust-resistance, meaning it could survive being submerged under 6 meters of water (about 20 feet). So that it must have no trouble having a can of Yerba Mate spilled onto it.

A very important factor that’s missing from the 14 is really a SIM card tray. In america, the iPhone 14 is only going to use an eSIM. Apple has partnered around carriers to guarantee the procedure for moving the quantity from your own old phone to an iPhone 14 is really as simple as putting your old iPhone close to your brand-new one and carrying out a few prompts. Smaller carriers like Mint Mobile and US Mobile also offer eSIMs.

My own phone is on Google Fi, which supports eSIMs. However when I tried to transfer my number to an assessment unit, I had to get hold of the carrier for assistance. (Works out my SIM card was very, early.)

The iPhone 14 comes in five colors: Product Red, midnight, starlight, purple and blue, that is the colour of the review unit Apple lent me.

iPhone 14 cameras

The iPhone 14 has three cameras: a primary wide angle and ultrawide cameras on the trunk, and a fresh updated TrueDepth camera system on leading. The iPhone 14’s camera is comparable to the primary camera on the iPhone 13 Pro, that is among the explanations why I called it an iPhone 13 Pro minus the telephoto camera.

When compared to iPhone 13, the 14’s main camera includes a larger sensor and a fresh lens with a faster f1.5 aperture. All that hardware coupled with Apple’s new processing pipeline, called Photonic Engine, helps improve image quality, particularly when you take photos in darker environments.

The iPhone 14 takes great photos because of a more substantial image sensor and a fresh way Apple processes photos.

And in my own tests, the iPhone 14 takes great photos and videos. I could get yourself a respectable snap, even though the lighting wasn’t good. Browse the photo below of your dog that I took in the not-so-bright interior of a restaurant. Notice how well the 14 captures the texture and detail in the dog’s fur. In addition, it did an excellent job of freezing the action despite the fact that your dog was moving his head when i was taking the photo.

The bigger sensor and new processing helped enhance the brightness without boosting image noise.

Even though 14’s ultrawide camera is among the best cameras, it’s still a step down from the primary camera when it comes to overall image quality and performance. And the ultrawide camera can’t double as a Macro camera enjoy it does on the iPhone 14 Pro. But I really do appreciate the way the extreme field of view gives photos and videos a dramatic look.

It’s tough to seize an image of Maisie the cat. The ultrawide camera did an OK job, but it isn’t great.

The iPhone 14’s Night mode is improved, but nonetheless suffers from source of light reflections. Have a look at the below photo of an overpass. Notice the way the store’s sign is reflected in the night time sky.

Here are a few other photos I took with the iPhone 14.

Cinematic mode got an upgrade also it is now able to record 4K video at 24 fps. Gleam new tool for video image stability called Action mode. Basically, it applies GoPro-like degrees of image stabilization if you are recording a video. The Galaxy S22 includes a similar feature called Super Steady. If you are shooting 4K video on the iPhone and use Action mode, the resolution drops to 2.8K. However the email address details are fantastic.

Video quality is great overall in bright light, but under dimmer lighting the facts look muddy. Have a look at my iPhone 14 review video to visit a couple of clips I shot utilizing the phone.

iPhone 14 processor: A15 Bionic chip

The iPhone 14 has Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, that is another reason it looks like a repackaged 13 Pro. This past year, there have been two versions of the chip: One for the iPhone 13 and 13 Mini, and another having an extra GPU core for the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. The 14 gets the one with the excess GPU core.

When it comes to performance, the iPhone 14 is speedy. Animations look smooth. Gaming is fun and the iPhone 14 handled everything I threw at it, from Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt 8: Airbourne Plus to Warped Kart Racers and Lego Brawls.

As the A15 Bionic was introduced with the iPhone 13 series, it’s still probably the most powerful processors in virtually any phone sold today.

Inside our benchmark tests, the iPhone 14 performed on par with last year’s iPhone 13 but continues to be faster and much more powerful than any Android phone currently sold. Such powerful isn’t just something you’ll use today, but it’ll future-proof the telephone for years. Browse the outcomes of our benchmark tests below.

When it comes to battery, the iPhone 14 lasts a tad longer compared to the iPhone 13. I could easily complete a complete day with my screen-on time averaging 5 hours each day, which is normally with other phones we’ve tested. The upsurge in battery life will come in part from the redesigned interior and also iOS 16, which in my own time with the telephone was peppy, smooth and lacked any bugs. iOS 16 can be available as a free of charge update for the iPhone 8 and later.

The iPhone 14 may charge quickly. It’s nowhere close to the fast charging speeds on the OnePlus 10 Pro, however the 14’s battery went from 18% to 81% in 45 minutes. I charged it utilizing the included Lightning-to-USB-C cable and a third-party 20-watt wall adapter that I purchased since Apple doesn’t ship one in the box.

iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 13, 12, 11

So, in the event you upgrade? If you want the iPhone 12 and 13, you will be right in the home on the iPhone 14, but there is no compelling reason to upgrade from either of these phones. The iPhone 14 is an excellent upgrade if you are utilizing an 11 or older iPhone since it provides longer battery life, faster performance, a far greater screen, increased durability and cameras and also safety features like Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via Satellite.

If you are attempting to decide between getting an iPhone 14 or the iPhone 13, I’d help you to save lots of money and go for the recently discounted $699 iPhone 13 or small $599 13 Mini. But if you’d like those new safety features, it’s worth taking into consideration the iPhone 14.

I enjoyed my time with the iPhone 14. Standard upgrades just like the ones within the iPhone 14 are geared at individuals who just want a fresh iPhone and so are upgrading from models which are years old. As the iPhone Pros have the flashiest new features, you can forget the improvements Apple designed to the iPhone 14. However the familiar iPhone 14 is similar to comfort food and can definitely hit the location for many people.
