Jury tells Alex Jones to cover Sandy Hook victim’s family $4M+

Austin, Texas

A Texas jury Thursday ordered conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to cover a lot more than $4 million less than the $150 million being sought in compensatory damages to the parents of a 6-year-old boy killed in the Sandy Hook massacre, marking the 1st time the Infowars host has been held financially responsible for repeatedly claiming the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history was a hoax.

The Austin jury must still determine how much the Infowars host should pay in punitive damages to Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, whose son Jesse Lewis was on the list of 20 children and six educators who have been killed in the 2012 attack in Newtown, Connecticut.

The parents had sought at the very least $150 million in compensation for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Mr. Jones attorney asked the jury to limit damages to $8 one dollar for every of the compensation charges they considered and Mr. Jones himself said any award over $2 million would sink us.

It likely wont function as last judgment against Mr. Jones who was simply not in the courtroom over his claims that the attack was staged in the interests of increasing gun controls. A Connecticut judge has ruled against him in an identical lawsuit brought by other victims families and an FBI agent who done the case. He also faces another trial in Austin.

Mr. Jones lead attorney, Andino Reynal, winked at his co-counsel before leaving the courtroom. He declined to touch upon the verdict.

Beyond your courthouse, the plaintiffs attorney Mark Bankston insisted that the $4.11 million amount wasnt a disappointment, noting it had been only area of the damages Mr. Jones will need to pay.

The jury returns Friday to listen to more evidence about Mr. Jones and his companys finances.

In a video posted on his website Thursday night, Mr. Jones called the reduced award a significant victory.

I admitted I was wrong. I admitted it had been a blunder. I admitted that I followed disinformation however, not deliberately. I apologized to the families. And the jury understood that. What I did so to those families was wrong. But I didnt take action deliberately, he said.

The award was additional money than my company and Personally, i have, but we will work on attempting to make restitution on that, Mr. Jones said.

Mr. Bankston suggested any victory declarations may be premature.

We arent done folks, Mr. Bankston said. We knew getting into this case it had been necessary to aim for the moon to have the jury to comprehend we were serious and passionate. After tomorrow, hes likely to owe much more.

The quantity awarded in cases like this could set a marker for another lawsuits against Mr. Jones and underlines the financial threat hes facing. In addition, it raises new questions concerning the ability of Infowars which includes been banned from YouTube, Spotify, and Twitter for hate speech to keep operating, even though companys finances remain unclear.

Mr. Jones, who has portrayed the lawsuit being an attack on his First Amendment rights, conceded through the trial that the attack was 100% real and he was wrong to possess lied about any of it. But Mr. Heslin and Ms. Lewis told jurors an apology wouldnt suffice and called in it to create Mr. Jones purchase the years of suffering he’s got put them along with other Sandy Hook families through.

The parents testified Tuesday about how exactly theyve endured ten years of trauma, inflicted first by the murder of these son and what followed: gun shots fired at a house, online and phone threats, and harassment on the road by strangers. They said the threats and harassment were all fueled by Mr. Jones and his conspiracy theory spread to his followers via his website Infowars.

Barry Covert, a Buffalo, NY, First Amendment lawyer who’s not mixed up in Jones case, said the $4 million in compensatory damages was less than he’d have expected given the data and testimony.

But I dont think Jones may take this as a victory, he added. The truth is, $4 million is significant even though we may have thought it will be just a little higher.

Jurors often decline to award any punitive damages after choosing a compensation figure. However when they elect to, the punitive amount is frequently higher, Mr. Covert said. He said he expects the parents attorneys to argue that jurors should send the message that no-one should profit off defamation.

They’ll want jurors to send the message that you cant create a quarter of a billion in profit off harming someone and say youll simply take the damages loss in court, Mr. Covert said.

Mr. Jones was the only real witness to testify in his defense, and he only attended the trial sporadically while still appearing on his show. And he came under withering attack from the plaintiffs attorneys under cross-examination, because they reviewed Mr. Jones own video claims about Sandy Hook through the years, and accused him of lying and attempting to hide evidence, including texts and emails concerning the attack. In addition, it included internal emails sent by an Infowars employee having said that this Sandy Hook stuff is killing us.

At one point, Mr. Jones was told that his attorneys had mistakenly sent Mr. Bankston the final 2 yrs worth of texts from Mr. Jones cellphone. Mr. Bankston said in court Thursday that the U.S. House Jan. 6 committee investigating the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol has requested the records and he intends to comply.

And soon after Mr. Jones declared I dont use email, Mr. Jones was shown one which originated from his address, and a different one from an Infowars business officer telling Mr. Jones that the business had earned $800,000 gross in selling its products within a day, which may total nearly $300 million in per year.

Mr. Jones media company Free Speech Systems, that is Infowars parent company, filed for bankruptcy through the two-week trial.
