NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar took film star Will Smith at his word when Smith apologized for slapping comedian Chris Rock at the Academy Awards.

Smith uploaded a video apology Friday.

“There is absolutely no section of me that thinks that has been the proper way to behave for the reason that moment,” he said. “There is no section of me that thinks that is the optimal solution to handle a sense of disrespect or insults.”

Abdul-Jabbar wrote Saturday he doesn’t believe Smith is only wanting to rehabilitate his image.

“Im likely to look at his words and accept they are sincere and honest,” he said. “Im likely to believe that following a lengthy amount of soul-searching, family rebuilding, and moral prioritizing, he was prepared to face a shocked and disapproving worldone that could no more be rooting for him.”

The Hall of Famer added he’s “rooting” for Smith.

Smith took exception to a tale Rock made about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, through the show. He walked onto the stage and slapped Rock. Smith returned to his seat and won the very best Actor Oscar for King Richard later in the show.

The condemnation of the 53-year-old was instantaneous, with Abdul-Jabbar on the list of critical voices.

The Academy of FILM Arts and Sciences banned Smith from some of its official events, like the Oscars, for 10 years. Projects which he was a component were positioned on hold indefinitely aswell.
