TUESDAY, Aug. 30, 2022 (HealthDay News) — Customers who bought a bestselling mattress in love with Amazon and at retailers nationwide are suing the maker amid claims that fiberglass fibers in the merchandise have damaged their health.

Zinus, Inc., is fielding multiple lawsuits over its GREEN TEA EXTRACT Mattress.” On the list of claims is really a proposed class-action lawsuit led by way of a California woman who’s representing thousands of people.

“It isn’t hyperbole to state that has ravaged a large number of individuals’ lives from over the USA,” James Radcliffe, an injury lawyer with Cueto Law, told the LA Times.

Radcliffes firm started a 2020 lawsuit with respect to Amanda Chandler and Robert Durham of Illinois, who said they spent months in a hotel and paid a lot more than $20,000 in professional mediation services following a Zinus foam mattress purchased at Walmart for his or her child contaminated their house with fiberglass in 2019.

An other woman, Vanessa Gutierrez of LA, told the Times that the mattress she bought on her behalf 4-year-old daughter had cost her nearly $20,000 in damages and left scars from the fiberglass on the girl’s chest and calves.

One reviewer on Amazon warned they unzipped the outer cover of the mattress and “unleashed [an] invisible fiberglass storm into the house,” CBS News reported.

A representative from Zinus told CBS News that the fiberglass is “standard in the mattress industry” and isn’t considered hazardous by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

“Most consumer complaints about fiberglass released from mattresses which have been reviewed by staff involved the outer cover being removed or damaged. If the outer cover remains intact, then your contact with fiberglass particles is likely to be minimal,” the CSPC told CBS News.

Californias Department of Public Health conducted a report published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health in February discovering that fiberglass fibers had “a potential threat of consumer exposure if the zipper on the outer cover is opened.”

Fiberglass is really a less expensive fire-retardant material. The queen-sized GREEN TEA EXTRACT foam mattress sells for approximately $310 on Amazon. It offers instructions warning customers never to take away the outer mattress cover, to safeguard the fire barrier inside, Zinus told CBS News.

Amazon didn’t react to CBS News requests for comment. Walmart did and noted that it along with other retailers have already been dropped from the original lawsuit.
