Man charged in Hawaii kidnapping kept girl shackled in bus, documents say

A guy in Hawaii accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl the other day kept the victim restrained in a yellow bus, in accordance with court papers filed Tuesday.

The lady escaped from her abductor after she convinced him to take her to a cafe in Hilo on Saturday and bystanders intervened, in accordance with police and the documents.

Duncan Mahi, 52, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, methamphetamine trafficking along with other counts, Hawaii police said.

The Friday abduction, which authorities said was at knifepoint from the beach by Anaeho’omalu Bay on the northwest side of Hawaiis Big Island, triggered an Amber alert.

The lady escaped Saturday after she struggled with Mahi outside Cafe Pesto in Hilo, police said in court papers filed Tuesday. A bystander stopped Mahi from chasing the lady, and another man said, Thats the lady in the news headlines, the documents said.

Mahi ran and fled in an automobile but was arrested later that day, police said.

Girls boyfriend reported Friday a man armed with a knife approached them, forced the lady to restrain his hands and legs with zip ties and kidnapped her, police said in the court papers.

The lady said she was forced right into a car, designed to smoke methamphetamine and sexually assaulted, based on the court papers.

She said she was then taken up to a house where she was kept in a parked yellow bus with a cable and a shackle mounted on her ankle, based on the court document. The very next day, she persuaded Mahi to take her to the cafe, the documents said.

A lawyer listed as representing Mahi didn’t immediately react to a obtain comment Wednesday.

Mahi has been held instead of $2 million bail, in accordance with online court public records. An initial hearing was scheduled for Thursday. Court public records usually do not indicate a plea.

A grand jury indicted Mahi on 11 counts Wednesday, NBC affiliate KHNL of Honolulu reported.
