Mark Rushbrook: Ford’s four wins in Cup Series “insufficient”

Four wins isn’t enough. Its not acceptable. We have to have more wins, said Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports. We have to have drivers further up the standings and hopefully at the very least four or even more drivers in to the playoffs.

Its certainly likely to be hard with where we have been with only four regular season races left, so its been challenging with the brand new car, the brand new package with getting our head around it and how exactly to arrange it properly likely to the track and optimizing it.

Trailing their rivals

Fords four wins through the initial 22 races result from three drivers and two organizations Team Penske rookie Austin Cindric won the Daytona 500, Stewart-Haas Racings Chase Briscoe won at Phoenix and Penskes Joey Logano found wins at Darlington and Gateway.

Loganos win in the inaugural Cup race at Gateway in early June was the manufacturers latest.

Weve seen lots of success with speed at different tracks where we’ve understood it, but we still didnt bring the win home. So, theres plenty of work to accomplish, but thats racing, Rushbrook said.

We always have to make all components of the automobile better, the engine, the aerodynamics, the chassis, the setup, the tire model, our simulator model, and thats what were focusing on. We have lots of meetings and advancements with this teams to do better weekly.

Up to now this season, it’s been problematic for teams which have experienced success to reproduce week-in and week-out.

Even Chevrolets Chase Elliott who leads the series with four wins had a three-race stint where he didnt finish much better than 21st.

Logano is another example.

He went in to the race at Darlington openly questioning whether Penske had the race-winning speed essential to compete regularly for wins then went and led 107 of the 293 laps on his solution to his first win of the 2022 season.

Weve had different strengths across different cars at the various tracks. I believe thats portion of the struggle is this car is indeed sensitive that even though one team is taking four cars or two cars to the track with really small differences, youll see one close to the the surface of the board and several or four down at another end of the board, Rushbrook said.

So, thats section of it and just focusing on how sensitive it really is and making certain we are able to really discover the optimum spot for these cars to perform.

With four races remaining in the standard season, Ford has Cindric, Briscoe and Logano locked in the 16-driver playoffs.

Based on whether you can find additional new winners within the last four races, only Ford driver Ryan Blaney (Penske) is high enough in points to also make the field.

That could leave Ford with four of the 16 drivers in the playoffs nearly a strong starting place ahead away with a string championship.

However the unpredictable nature of the growing season so far, means anything can be done prior to the Sept. 4 playoff opener at Darlington, S.C.

As a fan, its been the best racing weve ever endured. Due to the excitement you dont know who’s likely to be at the front end as you head to every race weekend, therefore i think thats been really, excellent, Rushbrook said.

The cars are so much closer sufficient reason for change comes opportunity and great drivers that maybe didnt have the proper opportunity with the old car, this plays to their wheelhouse and theyve got an excellent opportunity with this particular car.

I believe, again, its best for the sport to possess different teams, different drivers at the front end.
