Mercedes-Benz and Rivian sign Memorandum of Understanding for a strategic partnership and joint production of electric vans with the aim to set the typical in sustainable and all-electric transportation

Stuttgart, Germany & Irvine, California Mercedes-Benz Vans, full range provider of electric private and commercial vans, and electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian, have today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to initiate a strategic partnership. The partnership will enable the firms to cooperate on the production of electric vans.
At the mercy of the parties getting into final binding agreements also to acquiring the relevant regulatory clearances, the firms intend to set up a new jv manufacturing company with the goal of buying, and operating, a factory in Europe to create large electric vans for both Mercedes-Benz Vans and Rivian, starting in a couple of years. The goal is to build an all-new electric-only production facility leveraging a preexisting Mercedes-Benz site in Central/Eastern Europe.
The firms envisage production-optimised vehicle designs for efficient manufacturing on common assembly lines. They’ll try to produce two large vans, one predicated on VAN.EA (MB Vans Electric Architecture), the electric-only platform of Mercedes-Benz Vans, and another in line with the second generation electric-van, Rivian Light Van (RLV) platform. Further choices for increased synergies from the jv may also be explored.
The jv mirrors the normal objectives of Mercedes-Benz Vans and Rivian: both companies intend to rapidly scale the production of electric vans to greatly help the planet transition to cleaner transportation. By working together, they’ll be in a position to leverage operations synergies and substantially increase cost efficiency to make the vans less expensive for commercial customers driven by total cost of ownership.
