NY Mets closer Edwin Diaz has generated himself among the best relievers in MLB, and he reportedly are certain to get paid therefore following this season.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan said on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday that Diaz’s performance could earn him the initial nine-figure contract for a closer in MLB history.

“This is a man who got traded to the Mets for Jarred Kelenic a couple of years back, it appeared as if a whole disaster of a deal,” Passan said. “But that is his free-agent year at this time, and he’s been the very best reliever in baseball. And he’s gonna venture out and he might this offseason end up being the first 100-million-dollar closer.”

Diaz is in a three-way tie for fourth in the majors with 29 saves this year. Through 52 appearances, the right-hander includes a 1.38 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP with 100 strikeouts in 52.1 innings pitched. It’s his first-time reaching 100 strikeouts since his career-high 124 in 2018, that was his last season with the Seattle Mariners.

Amid Diaz’s stellar performance on the mound, he’s grown right into a fan favorite due to his entrance music. The Mets hosted artist Timmy Trumpet to execute the song live as Diaz entered Wednesday’s game to summarize a make an impression on the LA Dodgers:

Passan explained that Diaz’s growing popularity is making him a marketable star who is able to attract more fans who would like to see him lock down the ultimate inning.

“I believe section of it [is] once you factor in, if you are a baseball team, the theory you could market your closer, that you could market the ninth inning as a thing that everybody really wants to watch,” Passan said. “I’d like someone to develop an app that says, ‘The closer is to arrive right now, I wish to watch him shove for just one inning.'”

With Diaz at the trunk end of these bullpen, the Mets (83-48) are anticipated to produce a strong run this postseason. They haven’t experienced the playoffs since 2016, that was one year once they lost to the Kansas City Royals on the planet Series.
