Netflix with ads may not include offline viewing

Netflix’s upcoming ad-supported tier is probably not the very best streaming option for commuters along with other viewers who frequently watch on the run. Developer Steve Moser has discovered text within the code of the service’s iPhone app that says “Downloads on all plans except Netflix with ads.” If viewers can’t download content with their devices on the tier, which means they won’t have the ability to watch their shows or movies while offline. Netflix neither confirmed nor denied the lack of offline viewing with the offering, nonetheless it told TechCrunch:

“We have been still in the first days of deciding how exactly to launch a lesser priced, ad-supported option no decisions have already been made. Which means this is all just speculation at this time.”

Back July, Netflix co-CEO and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos admitted within an earnings call that the upcoming subscription option won’t include all the service’s licensed content at launch. The business still must renegotiate handles studios in order to offer their shows and movies alongside ads. Similarly, the lack of offline viewing may also have the best reason apart from Netflix attempting to compel the tier’s subscribers to cover more for premium membership.

As TechCrunch notes, it may be technically challenging to serve ads with offline content. Actually, Netflix will not be the only real streaming platform having an ad-supported option it doesn’t include offline viewing. HBO Max’s and Hulu’s, for example, don’t possess a download function either. Predicated on Netflix’s statement, though, things could still change by enough time the tier launches early next year.
