NEW YORK sheriff stocking schools with AR-15 rifles in wake of Uvalde shooting

MARSHALL, N.C. When schools in a single NEW YORK county reopen later this month, new security measures includes stocking AR-15 rifles for school resource officers to utilize in case of a dynamic shooter.

Spurred by theelementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 children and two teachers dead in-may, school officials and Madison County Sheriff Buddy Harwood have placed among the semiautomatic rifles in each one of the countys six schools. Each one of the guns will undoubtedly be locked in the safe, Harwood said.

The NEW YORK school district and sheriffs office are collaborating to improve security following the Uvalde shooting revealed systemic failures and egregiously poor decision-making, leading to more than one hour of chaos prior to the gunman was finally confronted and killed for legal reasons enforcement, in accordance with a report compiled by an investigative committee from the Texas House of Representatives.

Madison County Schools Superintendent Will Hoffman said school administrators have already been meeting regularly with local police, including Harwood, to go over the updated safety precautions.

Harwood said the countys school resource officers have already been training with instructors from Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.

Harwood said the safes where in fact the AR-15s will undoubtedly be kept may also hold ammunition and breaching tools for barricaded doors.

Well have those tools in order to breach that door if needed. I really do not want to possess to perform back out to the automobile to seize an AR, because thats time lost. Hopefully well will never need it, but I’d like my guys to be as prepared as prepared could be, he said.

Schools are scheduled to reopen Aug. 22, based on the Madison County Schools website.

As the optics of school resource officers potentially handling AR-15s in schools could be discomforting for some, Harwood said he believes this is a necessary response.

I hate that weve arrived at a place inside our nation where Ive surely got to put a safe inside our schools, and lock that safe up for my deputies in order to acquire an AR-15. But, we are able to shut it off and say it wont happen in Madison County, but we never know, Harwood said.
