Packers announce 3 new additions to apply squad, one spot left

1 day after signing 12 players to the practice squad, the Green Bay Packers added three more on Thursday, leaving one spot left unclaimed.

The Packers announced the signing of receiver Juwann Winfree, cornerback Benjie Franklin and tight end Shaun Beyer to the 16-player practice squad.

Franklins signing was reported earlier Wednesday, while Winfrees representation announced his signing later Wednesday. Reports of Beyers signing arrived Thursday.

Franklin, an undrafted rookie from Tarleton State, spent training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Winfree, now in Year 3 in Green Bay, is starting the growing season on the practice squad for the next straight year after losing out to rookie Samori Toure for the No. 7 receiver spot. He played in eight games for the Packers last season.

Beyer, an undrafted free agent from Iowa, spent training camp with the Vikings after spending the majority of 2021 on the Denver Broncos practice squad.

The question now becomes who’ll take the 16th and final practice squad spot. The Packers have mentioned wanting both kicker Ramiz Ahmed and safety Micah Abernathy back on the practice squad, but theres now room for only 1 player.

Ahmed could possibly be valuable insurance behind Mason Crosby, while Abernathy made the teams initial 53-man roster before being released to create room for Rudy Ford. Its likely Abernathy really wants to pursue a fresh opportunity after an extraordinary preseason.
