NORTH PARK (AP) The Padres are giving reliever Josh Hader a rest from the closer role after ninth-inning meltdowns on Thursday and Friday led to NORTH PARK losses.
Padres manager Bob Melvin stated before Saturdays game contrary to the Washington Nationals that the left-handed Hader will be given time and energy to try to workout his issues.
We shall probably give him a rest from that (closer) in the interim here, let him focus on some things, Melvin said. But, our best team, obviously, has been Josh Hader in the closers role and thats why we got him. So, we shall give him just a little break for the present time.
Melvin said the Padres closer role will be predicated on matchups game by game, basically closer by committee. With Hader out as closer for the present time, the role will may very well be shared by Padres right-handers Luis Garcia and Robert Suarez and lefties Adrian Morejon and Nick Martinez.
At 66-56, NORTH PARK enters Saturdays game battling for the 3rd and final National League wild-card spot. Because the trade deadline, the Padres are 6-10, and 25-32 within their past 57 games.
Hader, who was simply acquired from Milwaukee on August 1st for four NORTH PARK players, including then Padres closer Taylor Rogers, ha struggled because the move. He’s got been on the mound once the game-winning run for the opponent has scored in all of his last three appearances, and he’s got allowed six runs in 3 1/3 innings with NORTH PARK.
Theres a typical that I hold myself to and thats not result-based, but more executing pitches and engaging in a location where Personally i think dominant, Hader said after Friday nights outing where he didn’t record an out while walking a batter, creating a throwing error and surrendering a two-run homer to rookie Alex Call. All of the external things dont affect anything. I go and do might work … just continue steadily to move forward, study from the mistakes.
After bursting onto the scene a couple of years ago for his capability to pitch effectively in any relief situation, even going multiple innings sometimes, Hader have been used pretty almost exclusively as a ninth-inning closer with the Brewers since 2020, at his request. The Padres put him in on Thursday with runners on base, which he rarely did the previous few years in Milwaukee.
This year, Hader (2-5) has 63 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings with 29 saves and a 5.30 ERA in 42 games.
