#Panthers QB Sam Darnold is thought to have suffered a high-ankle sprain in line with the initial evaluation, sources say. Hell have an MRI tomorrow to look for the severity and when there’s other damage.
After spending last season as Carolina’s starter, Darnold is likely to be on the bench because the No. 2 quarterback behind Baker Mayfield this season.
Darnold missed five games last season with a shoulder injury he suffered contrary to the New England Patriots on Nov. 7. The Panthers placed him on injured reserve five days later and he was likely to miss at the very least a month.
The Panthers come in a potential transition phase this year, though head coach Matt Rhule is beneath the microscope to win given that he’s in his third year.
Darnold only completed 59.9 percent of his attempts for just two 2,527 yards with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 12 appearances during his first year with Carolina.
Carolina did add Matt Corral in the 3rd round of the 2022 NFL draft, but he’s got already been eliminated for the growing season with a foot injury.
Darnold is in the ultimate season of his rookie contract. He spent the initial 3 years of his career with the brand new York Jets before being traded to Carolina in April 2021.
Until Darnold can return, Rhule will probably turn to PJ Walker because the backup quarterback.
