Paper Girls, the long in-development adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s Image Comics series, has officially been cancelled by Amazon Prime Video. The sci-fi series may live to see a later date though with Deadline bringing word that production company Legendary is seeking a fresh home for the show’s potential next batch of episodes. The trade notes that Legendary will desire to look for a new home that may “utilize the popularity of series prefer to Euphoria and Sex Lives of College Girl.” Despite premiering by the end of July to strong ratings from critics, it debuted with a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, the series was overshadowed in the ratings department.
The series also happened to reach right as promotion on Amazon Prime Video’s GOD, THE FATHER of the Rings: The Rings of Power was from earnest and immediately after The Boys season three had just wrapped up. To outside observers, Prime’s investment in Rings was palpable, especially when compared to promotion that Paper Girls received through the entire summer. One probably wouldn’t need to look difficult to find someone that wasn’t even aware the series premiered at all.
Paper Girls, a period travel series which has drawn comparison to Stranger Things (despite released nearly per year earlier), also marked the most recent attempt at adapting a string by Eisner winning writer Brian K. Vaughan. Unfortunately in addition, it marks the next in a row that has been cancelled after just one single season after Y: THE FINAL Man ended at Hulu following its first season.
“This is simply not our first-time, ” Vaughan told ComicBook.com at SDCC, noting that fans appeared to have gravitated to Paper Girls a lot more than another shows. “It has been the best up to now. Just seeing just how much people love the comic, and comic fans, as I’m sure you well know, aren’t always pleased with adaptations. And there’s just been, as soon as I think the initial images this business dropped, individuals were like, ‘Wow, they first got it exactly right.’ It is possible to just tell the tone and the center of it, so just seeing just how people already embraced it with no seen one minute of it, it has been breathtaking.”
Paper Girlsstars Sofia Rosinsky as Mac Coyle, Camryn Jones as Tiffany Quilkin, Riley Lai Nelet as Erin Tieng, Fina Strazza as KJ Brandman, Ali Wong as Adult Erin, Nate Corddry as Larry, Adina Porter because the Prioress, and Jason Mantzoukas as Grandfather.
