Patricio Freire planning eventual title chase at 135 but says A.J. McKee trilogy looms, too

LA Bellator featherweight champion Patricio Freire already is, arguably, the best fighter in the promotions history.

If he adds a title in a third division to his resume, the offer with be sealed for certain. And thats precisely what Pitbull has at heart in the not-too-distant future.

I wish to defend the (145-pound) belt once more following this fight, and make an effort to take another belt again and be a champ-champ again, Freire told MMA Junkie at Thursdays Bellator 286 media day. I would like to take the (bantamweight) belt, but I’ve a large opponent to handle the scale. Im not too large, but Im strong therefore i have to observe how its likely to happen.

Freire (33-5 MMA, 21-5 BMMA) on Saturday will put the featherweight title at risk against Adam Borics (18-1 MMA, 9-1 BMMA) in the Bellator 286 main event at Long Beach Arena inLong Beach, Calif. The primary card airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

Freire will undoubtedly be putting his belt at risk for the very first time since he won it back from the.J. McKee in April with a unanimous decision. McKee beat him in July 2021 with a first-round submission for the title.

Freire said Borics is really a a lot more than game opponent. The oddsmakers and betting public appear to agree. Freire is a -145 favorite at Tipico Sportsbook.

Hes an excellent fighter. Hes evolved from his last loss, Freie said of Borics, who will come in with a four-fight winning streak all decisions. I look at him as a whole fighter. He’s got only 1 defeat by submission, and hes evolved a whole lot from his last loss. Hes an excellent kickboxer, but has great wrestling and trains plenty of jiu-jitsu. I understand hes complete and hes dangerous. He’s got good kicks, good knees, his hands are fast I must focus on that.

I saw hes at ease dreams in his eyes. But Im exactly the same.

Later on, Freire said its inevitable hell fight McKee for a third time. Saturday, McKee (18-1 MMA, 18-1 BMMA) is fighting at lightweight against Spike Carlyle (14-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) in the co-main event.

Both already had a supposed verbal run-in at media day, though Freire denied anything happened that has been started by him.

Theres still some problems to solve, he said. It aint over. We need to do the trilogy. I’d like that. Im not surprised hes running from that division. Now hes at lightweight, but keeps talking sh*t. I could fight him now. If he talks sh*t about me, lets go fight now.

Before that trilogy can occur, though, or perhaps a planned proceed to bantamweight to follow a third title (Freire was the initial simultaneous two-division champ in Bellator history when he previously the lightweight title, in addition to featherweight; he vacated the 155-pound belt, which now could be held by his brother Patricky), Freire knows he’s got to obtain past Borics.

Im prepared for 25 minutes, but nobody knows when my left hand will probably catch his chin. If its likely to be in the initial round in the initial minute, hes likely to decrease.
