People Share Top Signs of ‘Intelligence’ THAT TRULY Mean Nothing

A now-viral Reddit post has prompted a large number of online commenters to list qualities and character traits they think tend to be viewed as signs of intelligence but really mean nothing.

Posting in Reddit‘s popular “Ask Reddit” forum on Thursday, Redditor u/Indianfattie asked: “What’s incorrectly regarded as an indicator of intelligence?” The post has amassed over 42,000 upvotes and much more than 26,000 comments.

What professionals Say

In accordance with various psychologists and psychotherapists, there are some different ways to find out whether someone is highly intelligent. Talking with Bustle, Christine Scott-Hudson, licensed psychotherapist and owner of Create YOUR DAILY LIFE Studio, said empathy, compassion and curiosity are traits of highly intelligent people.

“There is a correlation between high emotional intelligence and high IQ in psychological assessments,” Scott-Hudson said. “We realize that the bigger an individual scores in traits of empathy, the bigger the individual will score in traits of effective verbal comprehension.”

Dr. Catherine Jackson, an authorized clinical psychologist and board-certified neurotherapist, added that highly intelligent folks are also observant, possess self-control and an excellent working memory, can recognize their limits and “opt for the flow.”

“An extremely intelligent person is person who is flexible within their thinking and will adjust to changes, they think before they speak or act, and they are in a position to effectively manage their emotions,” Jackson said. “In a nutshell, they possess a number of different forms of intelligence, including however, not limited by intellectual, social and emotional intelligence.”

‘Ask Reddit’

Needless to say, there are several character traits and/or qualities that lots of people have arrived at keep company with intelligence that could not mean much. In accordance with Reddit, those traits are:

Being Opinionated

Many Redditors argued that it is perfectly “normal” to be opinionated, but it isn’t an indicator of intelligence in and of itself. Actually, many said knowing when to avoid forming an impression is really a better indicator of intelligence.

Redditor u/skyefire27 said “having opinions on literally everything” is among their “biggest pet peeves.”

“[But] on the other hand, immediate respect is out to anyone who’s in a position to say they don’t really know enough concerning the topic to possess a solid opinion,” they wrote.

“Choosing never to have an impression on a subject you do not know much about is low-key probably the most intelligent things an individual can do,” AllergicToStabWounds said.

“After all, you could have an impression on everything, you merely need to be very alert to how well-founded it really is by your understanding of the subject, and become available to changes of opinion when talking with others, as you might find a fresh perspective,” u/Skygge_or_Skov commented.

Being Quiet

Jackson told Bustle that being “quiet and observant” tend to be good indicators someone is highly intelligent; however, some Redditors said the former might just mean someone doesn’t know very well what to state.

“I am told so often that I’m thoughtful and a deep thinker but really I cannot figure out what things to say lol,” u/RecreationalParks shared.

“My girlfriend thinks my silence is me thinking hard or letting her sort her emotions out but it is me attempting to think about anything to state but I’m a duma,” u/CaptainGundyr replied.

Redditor u/armchairairplane added: “People in school thought I was smart partly due to how quiet I’m. But I’m a similar, I just have no idea what things to say!”

Wearing Glasses

Interestingly enough, a 2018 study of 300,000 people discovered that there’s “some relationship” between nearsightedness and intelligence, CNN reported. However, the network was quick to remind individuals who “correlation will not imply causation”something many Redditors described aswell.

“Yeah I wear glasses and I’m an IDIOT,” u/TobinCobin joked.

“After all seriously, us people who have glasses couldn’t even pass a watch test,” u/bigthagen87 quipped.

Redditor u/moltencheesesyringe added: “Can confirm, have a pal which has glasses…he’s a fking dumb.”

Redditors said other “incorrectly regarded as an indicator of intelligence” include having a degree, wealth and the capability to solve a Rubik’s Cube.

In June, a Redditor posting in the “Ask Reddit” forum went viral after asking Star Wars fans to talk about their most controversial assumes the beloved franchise.
