Physicist trolls James Webb Space Telescope fans with an image of a chorizo sausage

Using its captivating images of far-flung galaxies, its safe to state the James Webb Space Telescope has captured the imagination of around the world. It had been also recently the main topic of a not-so-charming prank. On July 31st, tienne Klein, the director of Frances Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, shared a graphic he claimed the JWST captured of Proxima Centauri, the nearest-known star to sunlight.

“It had been taken by the James Webb Space Telescope, Klein told his a lot more than 91,000 Twitter followers. This degree of detail… A fresh world is unveiled each day.” A large number of people took the post at face value and retweeted it without comment.

A couple of days later, Klein admitted that what he shared was actually an image of a slice of chorizo against a black background. “Because of certain comments, Personally i think obliged to specify that tweet showing an alleged picture of Proxima Centauri was a tale, Klein said. Let’s figure out how to be skeptical of the arguments from positions of authority just as much as the spontaneous eloquence of certain images.”

Klein subsequently apologized for the prank and told French news outlet Le Point (via Vice) he posted the image to teach the public concerning the risk of fake news. I also believe that easily hadnt said it had been a James Webb photo, it wouldnt have already been so successful, he noted. After everything was said and done, Klein shared the recent image the JWST captured of the Cartwheel galaxy. This time around he was quick to make sure his followers that the photo was authentic.
