St. Louis Cardinals

Cardinals update: The Cardinals arrive in town as the first-place team in the National League Central, having overtaken the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this month. The Cardinals made a pair of additions to their starting rotation at the trade deadline, acquiring LHP Jose Quintana from the Pittsburgh Pirates and LHP Jordan Montgomery from the New York Yankees. Both have thrown well in three starts apiece with their new team. 1B Paul Goldschmidt, the former Diamondbacks slugger, is having a monster season, hitting .331/.415/.620 with 29 homers. He is a leading candidate for the NL MVP award. 3B Nolan Arenado also is having a terrific year. He is hitting .296/.362/.555 with 25 homers while playing his usual great defense at third base. 2B Nolan Gorman, a Phoenix native who attended Sandra Day O’Connor High, is hitting .247/.318/.470 with 13 homers in what has been a solid rookie season. RHP Adam Wainwright, who is not scheduled to pitch in this series, has a 3.27 ERA in 23 starts, another impressive year for the veteran starter.
