Princess Diana was likely to proceed to America with boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed before her tragic death, in accordance with her former bodyguard.
Lee Sansum was section of the security detail caring for the royal and her sons, Princes William and Harry, because they holidayed in St. Tropez in July 1997. The household was staying on businessman Mohammed Al-Fayeds luxury yacht, the Jonikal, and paparazzi swarmed the boat daily desperately attempting to snap photos of Diana and Dodi together.
The press were the bane of her life everywhere, not only in St. Tropez, Sansum writes in his book, Protecting Diana: A Bodyguards Story, out Tuesday. And she thought to me, You’ll find nothing I could do in the united kingdom. The papers there attack me regardless of what I really do. Then she explained, I would like to visit the US and live there therefore i can get from it all. At the very least in the us they like me and can leave me alone.’
Sansum, a former private military contractor, remembers asking Diana if her sons, William, then 15, and Harry, 12, will be choosing her. He writes that Diana explained she’d never be permitted to take them and that, if she moved, I’ll probably only have the ability to see them within their school holidays.
Nonetheless it seemed that Diana could have seen leaving her sons as a sacrifice that could ultimately save them.
You can tell Diana was an excellent mother, so loving and mindful of her two boys nonetheless it looked as though she may need to leave them both behind in the united kingdom to flee from the press, who hounded her relentlessly each day of her life, Sansum writes. It had been and to free them from all the attention they got when she was using them.
Finally, a couple of days in to the holiday, Diana upset that the press scrum was causing extra work with her security detail suddenly announced that she was off to inform the lurking press that she was leaving the united kingdom once and for all.
I was alarmed because if we thought the press pack outside was huge now, simply for her holiday, it could probably rise ten-fold if she gave them a tale as large as this one, the writer writes. The area will be swarming with paps, desperate to obtain pictures of the princess who was simply going to leave everything behind to perform off to America.
Based on the book, Diana did venture out to talk with reporters but ultimately didn’t say anything about her plans.
Sansum flicks away critics who’ve labeled the royal mentally unstable.
I could let you know that I spent ten days near her and she was probably the most balanced people I’ve ever met, he writes. I should be aware of. I’m trained to identify if someone is unbalanced. Its section of my job. You search for signs that folks give off if they are under stress since it means they could be about to take action. Diana wasnt excessively angry or uncontrollable. She was normal and incredibly deliberate.
He also dismisses reports that Dodi Al-Fayed was only a summer fling made to make Dianas ex-boyfriend Dr. Hasnat Khan jealous.
These were really friendly and affectionate towards each other, he writes of Di and Dodi. The people on the security team all thought it had been game on and would turn into a serious relationship. You wouldnt see them kissing in public areas, so some individuals misread that as though it wasnt an enchanting relationship but her boys were often around and the paparazzi were always there too, in order that naturally made them more cautious and less demonstrative one to the other.
It had been purely by chance that Sansum had not been assigned to provide for the couple because they spent amount of time in Paris by the end of August 1997. Instead, his buddy, Trevor Rees-Jones, was tasked with the work. Rees-Jones was badly injured in the automobile accident that killed driver Henri Paul, Dodi and Diana. The automobile have been speeding while attempting to outrun a pack of photographers.
Diana was among the nicest people you can meet, Sansum remembers. She was lovely, actually, only a normal one who clearly loved her boys. The indegent woman got slagged off for everything she dideven when it had been really normal things like working out to remain fit, the press gave her grief about this too. It had been so unfair.
