After shooting several games of pool in the Mets clubhouse, first baseman Pete Alonso sat down with MLB.com at Citi Fieldon Saturday and spoke on an array of topics, from the rise of the Mets to his car wreck earlier this year.
MLB.com: You’re having an excellent season in 2022. So how exactly does this year compare to your first year in the league once you hit a rookie-record 53 home runs?
Pete Alonso: I believe this year is actually special. We were in the playoff hunt [in 2019], however now we have been in a pennant race. Individually, 19 really was special and monumental, but Personally i think this season is totally different because I believe we’ve enough talent to win the planet Series. We have been obviously constantly in place if we do our jobs in order to win the division and visit the playoffs. For me personally, its so exciting.
MLB.com: When I understand this team, it appears the players are experiencing fun.
Alonso: We’ve an extremely good band of guys. Nothing like we havent had before, but this group specifically complements one another well. They’re just fun to be around each day. This year is just about the most fun I had arriving at the yard each day.
MLB.com: All I hear is how manager Buck Showalter changed the culture. What does he mean for you?
Alonso: Buck has been great all year. He does an excellent job of putting guys in the perfect position. He doesnt just look at whats in some recoverable format. What he does is, he does an extremely good job speaking with the people, really understanding what type of state of mind everybody is in. What could be the best matchup in some recoverable format, might not be the very best matchup the truth is. Personally i think he does a good job of blending information he has available and also talking with guys. I believe he’s got done a phenomenal job managing everybody all of this year.
MLB.com: With regards to you, Showalter appears to know when to push the proper buttons. Why by that’s, he appears to know when to place you because the designated hitter.
Alonso: I trust him. I trust his decisions. After all, he is attempting to win therefore am I. Wherever Im at in the lineup, I simply wish to accomplish the very best job I could each day.
MLB.com: I believe the Mets can go far in the postseason.
Alonso: Completely. I think we’ve an opportunity to function as last one standing. We need to earn that right. We need to reach the postseason first. We’ve an extremely good shot to create it. But I believe the potential will there be. Sky’s the limit for all of us.
MLB.com: Why do you consider it is possible to go far?
Alonso: Talent and chemistry. You’ve got a couple of guys pulling for every other in the clubhouse each day. Chemistry and talent, that always equals success.
MLB.com: How anxious will you the postseason?
Alonso: I dont think anxious may be the right word. I’d say, its something Ive dreamt of as a youngster, playing postseason baseball, competing and winning a championship. Thats why most of us play. But we have been not there yet. We’ve a little methods to go. We’ve some people inside our way. You want to capitalize with this moment. Im really excited, but, again, I cant really get too excited because thats not reality yet. We need to focus on each and every step before that.
MLB.com: You have that three-game series contrary to the Braves toward the finish of the growing season. How good are they?
Alonso: They’re an excellent team, extremely talented. But at this time, we really cant consider them. We play the Brewers, who’ve been playing effectively. They will have an excellent pitching staff and may score lots of runs. They will have a power environment. They’re [playing] in the same way hard as other people right now because they’re fighting for a playoff spot. Immediately after that, we need to proceed through a few different time zones and play in Oakland.
The Braves are great, but nobody ought to be taken lightly. We cant look that far ahead. Whenever we get [to Atlanta], its likely to be considered a fun series as you have two great teams, highly talented teams. The Braves, its likely to be considered a pretty hostile environment.
MLB.com: Will there be a stat in the hitting and fielding categories you focus on probably the most?
Alonso: I dont think there’s one stat that basically can provide you that a lot of important thing. I believe its all-encompassing. You need to look at all of the different things that sort of go into just what a baseball player is. Additionally, there are lots of things that are not on the stat sheet like may be the player going from first to third? You dont note that stat. You see stolen bases. You see runs scored. But is he taking that extra base? Is he advancing on balls in the dirt? Is he taking that extra base? Even though you hit a deep fly ball to the outfield guy is on second no outs youre still advancing the runner rather than bunting. Are you currently playing the overall game within the overall game? Are you currently being smart defensively? There exists a large amount of gameplay that fully encompasses the growing season. Yeah, home runs are excellent. Hitting for average is excellent. There are a great number of things in the game that you cant really see on the trunk of a baseball card.
MLB.com: Thats the thing I noticed about you, Pete. Since youve experienced the league, I dont hear you discuss home runs. You dont brag about any of it.
Alonso: Home runs are accidents. Im attempting to hit a sharp line drive somewhere in the center of the ballpark. Homers are simply mistake pitches that I must say i put an excellent swing on. It just happens to debate the fence. I believe to be consistent, you cant think about hitting home runs. For me personally, at the very least, I expose myself when I try to hit home runs or hit the ball 800 feet. The great thing for me would be to stay within myself, swing within my pitch and make an effort to hit a difficult line drive somewhere.
Alonso: Im doing great. Many thanks for asking. Again, Im really fortunate to be alive. Im really fortunate that Im in a position to do my job and play the overall game that I really like. (From then on car wreck), I was gathering myself. I was attempting to ensure that my legs and arms were still working. It had been really surreal.
I honestly didnt know if things were likely to be working after flipping over maybe once or twice. And to have the ability to go out of that rather than have substantial injuries is actually a blessing. I honestly feel I’ve multiple guardian angels. Im really pleased to compete and just play. Im really pleased to be here, not only for my teammates, but also for my partner, my parents, brother and family aswell. Im happy Im here.
It would go to show that anything can occur to anyone at any given day. For me personally, plenty of peoples lives may have changed exactly like that my partner [Haley], my parents, my buddy, all my children members, my teammates, coaching staff. Having me not be here, great deal of thought, is weird. I dont know very well what it might be like. Im just happy that Im healthy. Im happy that Im here. Im just really blessed.
MLB.com: How can you complete it and play baseball?
Alonso: What else am I likely to do? Theres no other choice. For me personally, the more I believe about any of it its not mentally suppressing. Its that the more I must say i thought over it, there is absolutely no other choice. EASILY were to just sit and dwell and become scared to call home life, thats not what the message ought to be. What I’d like would be to show people, it is possible to proceed through something and overcome it but still live with it.
Being in a life-and-death situation like this Im not attempting to forget it. I understand its there. Its understanding how to live with it, go on and taking advantage of each day and each and every minute. Things could be recinded and surviving in fear, living timidly, its not good. I would like to bring some awareness to individuals who are distracted while driving. Turn your damn phone off. Just keep two practical the wheel and just consider the road. You aren’t only being safe on your own, you’re being safe for others.
